Peggy and the Junior Ad Men by suburbanbeatnik Peggy and the Junior Ad Men by suburbanbeatnik
I just finished this piece of fan art for the great new show on AMC, "Mad Men." For all those of you who haven't seen it, I urge you to start watching it! It's a brilliant look at the lives of ad men in 1960 New York. It's stylish, smart, and character driven; I also get a kick out of it because as an illustrator and designer I've worked with my share of ad people, and all the stuff about brainstorming and the continual cat fights and competition rings (at least for me) hilariously true. (New episodes can be watched on Thursday night at 10, and older episodes can be downloaded on iTunes, or here, at EZTV [link] .)

In this piece, Peggy- the earnest new secretary, played by West Wing's Elisabeth Moss- is surrounded by preppy account guy Pete (Vincent Kartheiser on the left) and intellectual copy writer Paul (Michael Gladis on the right), with Ken, another account guy, to the left reading about maples and Harry, a media buyer, brandishing his lollipop to the right. I'm quite amused by all these dudes- I find them so endearingly geeky. I'm quite fascinated how all of them are dressed perfectly for the period, down to the unflattering greased back hair.

X) Pete is one of those people you hate but can't stop looking at... I usually despise him -mainly because how he treats Peggy- but there's a moment, in which I feel pity for him, because he is miserable with his family and his wife... But then again, he does or says something that I hate, and he returns to my bad list :D

Don or Joan are fantastic choices -I love Joan she's ....GREAT- and Don is so charismatic and appealing... I also find Betty Drapper quite interesting... Damn!! All of them are great..this show is fantastic... XD

I haven't read SPQR novels, in fact my "roman period" was a long time ago, so I can't say anything about his Clodia :) Saylor was one of my best summers -my mother bought a collection of his works- and I spent two months immersed in Gordianus life :) and even when I've moved on, I've got a fond memory of those books...

Your portrayal of Cicero and Clodia is very close of what I had in mind when I read the book. She's energetic, agile and with a strong will. He seems astonished by her, he's stubborn and with strong ideas -but in my mind he was a little younger XD- ... Your drawing is very dinamic, specialy her pose, and you can really feel the energy between them....

I'm in love with this show! It's a fantastic drawing. You've captured Peggy's eagerness for knowing and improving in her work... The resemblance of the guys is great, but I miss some sneakiness in Pete's eyes ( I just happen to hate this guy XD)

Fantastic drawing -in fact all your gallery is great, loved the Cicero/Clodia ones, as I'm a fan of steven saylor books)-!! I would love to see your interpretation of Don Drapper...

Thank you! I think I did Peggy and Paul best in this drawing... Pete's okay, but he looks a little too sweet and innocent, I'm thinking. I am partial to his character, though, even though you're right, he is a sneaky bastard. :XD:

I really need to do more MM fanart... I can't decide whether I should do Don or Joan next, though.

That's so cool you like my Roman folks.... I used to really like Saylor, but I'm not so crazy about him now. I don't think I've ever read a really convincing Clodia yet. I rather like the way she's portrayed in the John Maddox Roberts SPQR novels, though.

So, what do you think of my shipping of C/C? :D

Ah, while I do love how you've captured Paul, I think my favorite part is that Ken is reading "All About Maples" -- researching for that story of his? ;)

Also, did you know that Jon Hamm (Don Draper) was on SNL this past week? They do two spoofs of "Mad Men". You should check it out!

Thank you, I'm glad you like! :D

Hehe, I saw SNL when it was on... I was so excited, I was telling everyone about it. "Don Draper's guide to picking up women" was especially hilarious.

There's actually going to be a parody of "Mad Men" on the Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horror" on Nov 2. I'm so looking forward to that!

Yay! "Mad Men" is an amazing show, and it's great at establishing at kind of dread that gets under your skin (like Twin Peaks when it wasn't being campy). Peggy is pretty cool, isn't she?

Paul was one of my favorite characters during the first season, but this season he's been such a douche.

Very nice! You really captured the characters well - especially Paul. And now that he's got a beard and is going all Bohemian, you'll have to do more of him, I suppose.

Keep up the good work!

I was wanting to draw Joan, but have they been padding her out a bit this season? Plus her hair this last episode was more orange than what she usually has...

I was thinking the same thing - she looks a bit more... expansive than she did before. Could just be a character thing, could be a Plot Point waiting to happen. We'll see, I guess.

I'll try to get myself to buckle down and do some sketching. Shake the rust off and all that. *smile*

I was so chuffed to see a new piece from you in my watchbox. I've only seen the previews for Mad Men but the attention to historical detail was such that the first time I saw them I thought it was an ad for an old movie (when I found out it was new stuff I defiantly offered a 'WOW';).

This piece is awesome, it makes me want to watch the show because I really get the feeling you've captured the characters in your drawing. I especially love Peggy as the central anchor for all the men, and her intelligent, direct expression. I love your style so much *sigh*.
