Mme. de Montespan- final by suburbanbeatnik Mme. de Montespan- final by suburbanbeatnik
This is the final for a sketch I did recently- [link] - at the suggestion of :iconharu-de-meziere:. Athénaïs, the marquise de Montespan, was one of the mistresses of Louis XIV, and she was a voluptuous, infamous courtesan, rumored to be a satanist, poisoner and witch. (And to quote Leela from Futurama, she was one of those witches that hurt people, not the kind that dance around on the Equinox.) There's embroidery of apples on her skirt to symbolize the fall of Eve, and there's a number of poisonous plants in the garden, including yew and monkshood.

Athénaïs is attired in the height of French mid-1670s fashion, in long-waisted low-cut bodice, a blue-violet satin gown, and a rose brocaded petticoat. This is the first full-length costume painting I've done in ages, and it certainly was a challenge getting the textures of the satin and the brocade right! But, I'm pleased with how it came out.

Thanks for the fav! I actually got a big laugh out of "poison ladie" and the comment, "poison ladie..now i draw in reallive stule." Um, what? ;P

But, yes, I worked hard on this piece and I even provide a link to the original sketch in the note. *shakes head* Now I know why some people were warning me about dA in the first place!

Thanks! No, I haven't read it... is it any good?

I first read about Montespan in Judith Merkle Riley's "The Oracle Glass"- I haven't read it in years, but I remember it being a good juicy read. Yeah, sweet l'il Athenais was definitely a piece of work!

I've read all her books, though admittedly I'm not a big fan of the whole "Vision of Light" series- the main character seems too much like a Mary Sue to me. My favorites are "Oracle Glass" and "The Serpent Garden"- "The Master of All Desires" was pretty disappointing. I wonder what's happened to her...?

Have you read "Pursuit of the Green Lion" and "The Water-Devil", the sequels to "Vision"? I guess "Devil" has been available in Germany since the '90s, but it's just gotten published in English for the first time this year. Go figure!

And did you stop reading "Vision" because Margaret of Ashbury annoyed you too? ;)

This is just lovely - you've captured not only the costume and attitude well, but the look of those 17th illustrations. It looks like a hand-tinted bookplate.

Well done!

Thank you! Now, I know this sounds like a shameless plug (and it is :P), but have you checked out the rest of my gallery? I have a lot of costumey goodness I think you might like. (Just to let you know, I'm a children's book illustrator and this isn't my actual working portfolio.... this is more of the indulgent fun for-me stuff I do on the side.) Anyway, your work is gorgeous, and I'd like to watch you, if you don't mind. :D

The detail in this is fantastic, especially in the ruffles in her sleeves and the way the light emphasizes the curls in her hair. It's also quite cool how you filled the garden in the background with poisonous plants (I'm glad to pointed it out-- I'm a botanical idiot, and that would've gone right over my head :)) Love that wispy, rippling texture of the satin, too.

Whee, an art trade! Wow, that sounds like fun! I'll do a pic of you as Emily and your darlin' Louis, if you could do a pic of me dressed as Henrietta Maria, caught between Charles I and Oliver Cromwell. Hahahaha... Yes, I know I'm completely cheesy... but hey, aren't we all? :D

Here's a few pics of me with vaguely 17th century looking hair... [link] ... and here... [link] ... Hope that helps!

Okay, I'll be willing to draw you and Louis in a clinch, like on a romance novel, BUT YOUR CLOTHES MUST BE ON! After all, what's the point (for me, anyway) to do a period picture if there's no clothes in it!? :D So, yes, those are my conditions...

As for my own pic, I'll send a note explaining everything. Thanks again! :excited:

Athenais was a wife turned courtesan who slept her way to the top, and was strongly suspected of poisoning several rivals. She was also implicated- although never arrested- of consorting with satanists and having the Black Mass performed over her naked body, in order to continue her hold on the King, whose attention evidently wandered away from her a number of times (and she seems to have been the neurotic, possessive type). You can read more here... [link]

Glad you're reading the Hilary Mantel and enjoying it... You'll have to let me know what you think when you're done!
