Mme. Pompadour thank you cards by suburbanbeatnik Mme. Pompadour thank you cards by suburbanbeatnik
EDIT: These cards are now available in my Cafepress store!
[link]

These are two cards I drew last night, to send out to a few art directors I know. I decided on a Madame Pompadour theme, mainly because I wanted to do something 18th century, but nothing involving the 1770s and 1780s. There's more to the 18th century than big hair! Although I like drawing/painting big hair as much as anyone else, of course, I think it has a tendency to be overdone. And the 1740s/1750s had perfectly cool clothes, as is seen in all those fabulous Boucher portraits of Mme. Pompadour.

Also, Sophia Myles was just terrific as Mme. Pompadour in that recent episode of Doctor Who!

Oh, much love. I'm trying to figure out how to make a doll on that style (and I totally admit part of it is due to my enjoying the costuming and design of that episode) and the problem with those Boucher paintings is that they give me no idea how the damn things were assembled!

Thanks! I love Boucher paintings too. RE: the doll, you might have to buy a book with a robe a la francaise pattern-- patterns are also on sale on Amazon. [link]

Aww! I finally saw this episode. I don't even watch the show but I just had to do it.
Sophia Myles is an oddly undiscovered gem. Well, not entirely undiscovered but I just for the life of me cannot figure out why she isn't adored by the whole planet.
She was so fantastically elegant in that role.

Tristan and Isolde did kind of suck. But I have to say, I thought she was gorgeous in that one as well, just from an aesthetic standpoint. She got major screen time, so I'm happy. :)

She's a wonderful actress, and it's too bad she's not a star yet. Why Kiera Knightley, and not her? Who knows... these things seem so random!

I really do not know. I much prefer her to Kiera Knightley.

I haven't seen that one. I just know I avoided "Tristan and Isolde" because I heard it was pretty bad. The main guy seemed so much like ';Prince Valium' to me...

Oh god I forgot about Tristan and Isolde! That was... yeah, that was pretty bad I'll admit. Never mind about that one. :P

You should read History Spork's take on "Tristan and Isolde" here: [link] It's hilarious!

Costume-wise, I know that when I saw pics of Isolde's laced-up gowns, I rolled my eyes. No one was lacing anything in the 500s or 600s, and forget about gowns existing either. Tunics, people... tunics! ;P

Oh, I love you. I always gripe about historical inaccuracies in movie costumes, but people just get annoyed with me. You are awesome. XD

Yay! We can gripe together. I bore my roommate talking about costumes, and why the ones in such-a-movie suck so badly (or, more rarely, are quite good).

Thanks- you're awesome too! :XD:

These cards are lovely! I love how you handle the drapery of her gowns. And I agree, Sophia Myles was great. If the new Dr. Who series had a classic, that was definitely one of them.
