Minerva by suburbanbeatnik Minerva by suburbanbeatnik
This is a commission I did for a client who just joined the navy. He's very into Roman and Greek mythology. Given what profession he was entering, we thought a portrait of Minerva (aka Athena) the goddess of war-- pictured by the sea, a trireme, and some Italianesque scenery-- would be appropriate.

Fantastic work, but I personally prefer the name Athena, it sounds better.

I do too, but the client wanted a portrayal of the Roman goddess, as opposed to Pallas Athene. :)

I love her swooshy red drape. My family used to jibe me that Athene was my patron goddess, it only got worse in college as I was majoring in business honors, lib arts honors, and textiles & apparel design - corresponding to Athena's being the goddess of strategic warfare, wisdom, and the household arts. plus, owls as an attribute? I can get behind that.

I always identified with Athena too... I'm not surprised that you like her as well! And you can't go wrong with owls, can you? :)

Joanne - thank you so much for accepting the commission!

I'm still waiting for the actual piece, but I can tell you it's exactly what I requested it would be. Both on the literal level and others as well. When describing what I hoped for, I rattled on at length about the nuance I hoped the painting would have and Joanne managed to capture it perfectly. It's brilliant.

P.S. Joanne, what were the medium and materials you used?

Thanks! It was lovely working for you, and I'm so pleased you liked the result.

I used acrylics on multimedia paper, my favorite. Did you receive the painting yet?

This is very appropriate for such an occasion! I really like your style. This is very well-drawn. I also like that you added the owl. Very nice touch ;)

This is lovely. :) I really like the subtle owl included in the lower corner of the drawing; a nice touch to Minerva and her mythos.
The only issue I can see is that, technically, triremes actually had three rows of oars, rather than one. Hence being a "tri"reme!
Other than that, simply beautiful. The details are wonderful, as is your shading. Thank you for sharing!

Haha, that's true! I guess I painted a bog-standard galley then. Oh well, it's still a warship of some variety, that's what really counts. :D

Thanks!
