Medieval Maleficient by suburbanbeatnik Medieval Maleficient by suburbanbeatnik
It's been a long time since I've posted any new historical Disney characters-- but here's a new one, courtesy of janey-jane, who commissioned this. This is Medieval Maleficient, and it's a 'historified' version of what Maleficient wore in Sleeping Beauty. Claire Hummel, aka Shoomlah, did this particular character first, and she did an amazing job. When Jane asked me for my take on this, I wondered, "Hmmm, how could I do something different than shoomlah?"  But I cracked open a copy of Illuminating Fashion(a must-read if you're interested in 14th or 15th century medieval western fashion), and was shortly inspired.

Maleficient's costume, out of all the designs in Sleeping Beauty, is the most historically based. It is clearly based on an early 15th century houppelande, and moreover-- an unbelted houppelande-- which was only worn by men, usually older men. Women wore houppelandes too, but they were usually belted high, under the breasts. This particular houppelande is based two miniatures: the first is the green gown worn by Sheba in the miniature "Solomon receiving the Queen of Sheba" from the Bible historiale, c. 1401, as well as the rose gown worn in the Avril image of Les Tres Riches Heures, c. 1412-1416. (The pointed dagged sleeves are inspired both the blue houppelande in the Avril painting, as well as the red houppelande worn in this image here, of "Wisdom and her children," also from the Bible historiale.)

Maleficient's splendid headdress is also based on the bifurcated hennins of the era. The image I used for reference was from Yolente Belle and her family presented to the Virgin and Child with saints George and Catherine, lost votive panel, c. 1422 (from a 17th cent. copy). Here's the detail I used of the hennin in question, also from the same painting. (Sorry for all the iPhone images uploaded to Twitter... these images are nowhere on the internet.)

So basically, I wanted to create a realistic gown that someone of that period would have worn. I didn't include the front slashes used in the original character design, since that's not something you would have seen back then, though I used some of the deep rose color in the undergown and collar details. I also didn't make Maleficient green, though I did give her a sallow complexion with a green undertone. (She rather looks like Cher, I think.)

Another note: I wanted to make Maleficient look like she lived in the same universe with Aurora. Aurora's gown is about 60-80 years later after Maleficient, but I think it suits M. to have a somewhat dated look, since (I imagine) a realistic mortal version of this character would not know or care about the current fashions.

Anyway, that's about it for now! If all goes well, I should have some more Historically Inspired Disney characters soon.
