Mary, Bloody Mary by suburbanbeatnik Mary, Bloody Mary by suburbanbeatnik
I did this for :iconladypakter4life:, and because I thought Mary Tudor needed a picture where she was young and cute, as opposed to where she's the usual stereotypical heavy. It's loosely inspired by the Carolyn Meyer novel, "Mary, Bloody Mary," the first book in the Young Royals series.

Basically I had this image in my head, and I had to get it down in paint before I lost interest in doing it. Mary's here, about 15 or so, dressed in a relatively simple red court gown and with her hair loose, because she's getting ready for bed. (This probably also explains the somewhat unusual display of cleavage, since I figured the maid would have helped loosen the top of the lacing on her bodice.) But her prayers have been interrupted by... just who? I have a pretty good idea of just who it might be, but I leave it to you to decide, dear reader.

Edit: I made the outlines of the shadow stronger and darker when someone pointed out it wasn't clear it was an intruder. Hope it looks better now, guys!

Yet again, another amazing piece Joanne!! This one I like in particular, there are so many elements to it! The fiery vibrancy of her gown is what instinctively draws me in, but I'm then drawn into the expression of her face. It's like appalled mixed with outrage at the thought of being interrupted. Once your done you can begin to comprehend viewing all the detail in the gown and shadowy background *drools*. These works blow my mind every time.

I think she´d been interrupted by Anne Boleyn or maybe Thomas Cromwell....

Good guess! I was actually thinking that it would be T. Cromwell. Wasn't he planning on marrying her at one point?

Yes that rotten (insert four letter word here plus "ing") dude did try to marry Mary.

Theres a novel called "The Spanish Tudor" by Freda M. Long from the 70's. In it, Cromwell not only tries to marry Mary (with Henry's blessings) but molests her too. She gives him one royal kick where it hurts though!!!

:iconladypakter4life: - I've never heard of Cromwell wanting to marry Mary before. I thought he was already married (and had a son, Gregory, who married Jane Seymour's sister).
I know he tried to befriend Mary when his fall was imminent, but I couldn't imagine a reformer like Cromwell wanting to marry a pious Catholic! Have you got a source? I'm intrigued. :)

:iconsuburbanbeatnik: - I absolutely adore this picture! You truly have talent; I love the damask especially!

Good? Amazing! Freda was well ahead of her period. I was rolling on the floor during the scene where Philip tells his friend Ruy about his wedding night,

"The Queen was marvelously inventive in bed....." (LMFAO)

Try to find it if you can! My English friend bought it from a second hand book shop (can't recall if in Canada or the UK). The Spanish Tudor- Freda M. Long. If you get the same one I have...you'll see that Mary is sooo pretty on the cover!

Wow, I really want to read it now. Unfortunately I can't find a copy on Ebay... Maybe when you come back to the States, you can scan the cover in so I can see what it looks like! :D

Theres a new book about Mary coming out!!!! Its called "Queen's Sorrow" by Susannah Dunn! It'll be out next year in around April. Type in the name in Amazon.com and read the synopsis..it sounds amazing and very pro Mary!

I just checked out the synopsis on "Queen's Sorrow"... it looks great! I think it's the first published novel I've ever seen that gives Mary a serious love interest. Now, here's hoping the cover looks nice so I'm not embarrassed to be seen with it... ;P

By the way, I just sent you a note. I tried to send it a few days ago, but deviantArt was acting up... grr!

I'm so glad you like it! It was lots of fun, especially after finishing a bunch of jobs recently. It's always good to give myself "assignments," to push myself to do new things, and being on deviantArt helps me out a lot. Thanks! :D

You're going to be posting new art soon, right? I know you've been busy travelling (I envy you), but I'd love to see new takes on the Tudors. *poke poke, nudge nudge* Pretty please? :)

Fantastic! I've always been fascinated by the Tudors and this is wonderful. No one ever remembers that Mary was young, once. :)

I personally think she was prettier than Elizabeth, before Mary got old and bitter. Liz always had that very horsey English face, while Mary looked cuter and more approachable.

But neither of them compare to Mary Stuart, of course... :D

I've read that Mary Stuart and Mary Bolyn were both supposed to be angels on earth. Apparently, 'Mary's' get all the looks.

I love the lighting, and the expression on her face--and she still looks adorable. The detail on the hem and sleeves of her dress is awesome, too.

You can tell I labored over the sleeves and the hem, right? ;P Man, that brocade was hard to paint. I don't know how Holbein did it!

OMG! I love this! You made my second Favorite Monarch hot! D She reminds me of the older, seated Mary portrait. Sort of hunched over, angry, and strong. And Chinese Wedding Red looks perfect on anyone, even redheads.

Also, thanks for making her a redhead. People make her a brunette too often. She was Elizabeth's sister for crying out loud!
