Mary, Bloody Mary by suburbanbeatnik Mary, Bloody Mary by suburbanbeatnik
I did this for :iconladypakter4life:, and because I thought Mary Tudor needed a picture where she was young and cute, as opposed to where she's the usual stereotypical heavy. It's loosely inspired by the Carolyn Meyer novel, "Mary, Bloody Mary," the first book in the Young Royals series.

Basically I had this image in my head, and I had to get it down in paint before I lost interest in doing it. Mary's here, about 15 or so, dressed in a relatively simple red court gown and with her hair loose, because she's getting ready for bed. (This probably also explains the somewhat unusual display of cleavage, since I figured the maid would have helped loosen the top of the lacing on her bodice.) But her prayers have been interrupted by... just who? I have a pretty good idea of just who it might be, but I leave it to you to decide, dear reader.

Edit: I made the outlines of the shadow stronger and darker when someone pointed out it wasn't clear it was an intruder. Hope it looks better now, guys!

Nope, Mary had bright red hair! [link]

Catherine of Aragon was a strawberry blonde too. Gingers, all of of them.

Oh wow, I don't know why I hadn't come across from this before. This is great! I love your vesion of Mary Tudor! Her expression is perfect for her as well. She wasn't a very happy person & I must say, I do not blame her. (After all, her dad Henry VIII banished her - along with her mother Catherine of Aragon - away, just so he could be with Anne Boleyn). H8 refused to see her after that! (What a "great" Father!) The detail & colouring in this is great!

This is so beautifully done.I like the rich colours, shading and the character herself. The gown looks fantastic too.Everything looks just stunning.

Can i ask what kind of media did you use to get such a vibrant effect?

Thank you! The original drawing was sealed with matte medium, and I painted over it with thin layers of acrylic, watered down for a more glaze-y watercolory look. I wanted to make her dress "Chinese wedding red"- I knew it would look pretty striking against a dark background, on someone with bright red hair. :)

Oh..wow thank you!I'd be honored if a great artist like you saw my try on and commented, especially on a technique suggested by them. :)

It will probably take a while before trying it - i don't even feel comfortable enough with simple watercolour techniques! - but i'll drop you a note.

Thanks again, for the helpful and encouraging comment. :)

I really have to say this has to be my favorite picture of Mary that i've found. It just gets her personality and looks so well, as for the Shadow i first assumed it was Anne Boleyn but after looking at it again it is definatly Male, Protestant Thomas Cromwell coming in to see the pious Catholic Mary praying? Its definatly an intriging scene

:) This is a wonderful picture, and truly captures exactly how I imagined a very young Mary Tudor from Carolyn Meyers book!. Annoyance with a touch of menace, though if it's Anne Bolyn or Thomas Cromwell etc I can't say I blame her!.

It's interesting, because for so long I had this view of Mary Tudor as the evil "bloody" tyrannical older sister who was vanquished and replaced by the "good" heroic younger sister with good riddance, but after reading Meyers book my perception completely turned around and I found myself sympathizing with her, even relating to her in some ways. Not that my own family life was ever that horrible, but I know how it feels to have your parents split up and your father replace your mother with another women and her kids.

I agree wholly that if "bloody Henry" had been a better person, husband and father, then perhaps Mary would not have seen the Protestant faith as a threat, or the cause of all her pain and problems, and history might have turned out differently.

Thank you! I actually emailed Carolyn Meyer and showed her the pic, and she loved it.

But then I asked her if she was interested in buying it, and she never wrote me back. I am still kind of embarrassed about that. :P
