Judith and Holofernes by suburbanbeatnik Judith and Holofernes by suburbanbeatnik
This is an old sketch from last year that I cleaned up and tightened the other day. It's Mariam (aka Judith) and Holofernes from the retelling of the Judith and Holofernes story. It's historical fantasy, taking place in the early 7th century BCE, and set in Lebanon, in the Beqaa Valley. It's also a romance, and a pretty tragic one at that. (No way around that-- Holofernes still has to lose his head. Poor guy.)

This is an entertaining story to write, though I've taken a break from it for the time being. The book of Judith is incredibly ahistorical-- for example, Holofernes is supposed to be Assyrian, but he's working for the King of Babylon, and he has a Greco-Persian name. I had to keep the name 'Holofernes' of course, but I had to do some historical tap-dancing to explain why an Assyrian prince would have such an unlikely name. I also changed the setting to Lebanon, because the Assyrians were invading it all the time, and it seemed to me a more interesting and varied setting than Judah at the period. (Plus I could invent a new Baalbek-esque city-state for Mariam to live in, which was fun.)

Costume notes: Holo is dressed in his best Assyrian captain's tunic, while Mariam/Judith is dressed to seduce in wrap-around garment with no undertunic and piles of jewelry. The girl with the sword is Mariam's Canaanite maid, and she is clearly wondering what the hell is going on with those two.
