A commission I finished recently for a client in Germany; this is John Graham, Lord of Claverhouse and the Viscount Dundee, and his son Jamie. He was an early Jacobite hero who was killed fighting for King James in 1689 (though Presbyterians hated him-- one of his nicknames was Bloody Clavers).

Since Graham came to such a tragic end-- his son died young, and apparently his wife went mad-- the client wanted him in a rare happy moment with Jamie, while he was alive. I depicted the two standing in Graham's estate in the Sidlaw Hills, and dressed in 1680s fashion. For the background I went all out and painted a full-blown Scottish scene, complete with heather and a dramatic sky. The client was very pleased with it.

His wife remarried a captain of his troop, sadly both died in an accident in holland and buried in Kilsyth old parish church, where another intriguing story begins

He was a really tragic guy, according to everything I've heard about him. I think his tragedy rubbed off on his wife too...

Thank you! I wanted to make it quintessentially Scottish-- and I think the heather and overcast dramatic sky definitely helped. :)
