Hilary Anstruther by suburbanbeatnik Hilary Anstruther by suburbanbeatnik
This is the other major character in my as yet unnamed plot bunny set in 1715. Madeline ([link]) meets Hilary Anstruther when she disguises herself as her twin sister Beatrice, in order to investigate her sister's disappearance. Anstruther is a foppish yet ruthless sword-for-hire from Edinburgh, who is Beatrice's fellow conspirator and Jacobite; throughout the course of Madeline's investigation he becomes one of the suspects in her sister's abduction (or murder), even if Madeline finds him intriguing, in a cold-blooded kind of way.

I based this character on Tim Roth's Archibald Cunningham from "Rob Roy," except here I imagine him played by Christopher Eccleston. (You might notice similar characters in my gallery- but I just can't get enough of those late 17th century/early 18th century fashions for men.)

THANK YOU for making the fashion historically correct! rarely do people bother to actually look into what they are writing/drawing/making a movie about. it's the little things that can make or break something

whoa rant.

good art as always. :) he reminds me of louis XIV except WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY better looking.

Hahaha, thanks! Your rant made me smile. One of my goals is (as a children's book illustrator) is to bring more historically accurate clothes to covers and picture books everywhere. There's nothing more annoying than seeing some book set way back when and the people on the cover are wearing some awful mushed-together Renfaire outfits. ;P

Yeah, the moment I saw that, I was like "HOMG, it's Archie!" Completely excellent, as always! Still can't get over your use of lines. Looking forwards to more!

Thanks! I love Archie so much, I know I have to enshrine a version of him in one of my stories. Isn't it strange to think he was invented out of whole cloth for the Rob Roy movie? He isn't in the Sir Walter Scott novel at all (which the movie is allegedly based on)- the hero of the Rob Roy novel is actually a bored middle class guy from London named Frank. (Doesn't that sound exciting!)

I love it, love the look in his eyes. I have to say though, in Rob Roy, Archibald Cunningham is played by Tim Roth, not Christopher Eccleston.

Yay! More early 18th century cotumes! :dance: The men's costumes are even better than the women's dresses of that time. The boot-sleeves are the best^^

Yup! And I do heart Archie. Wish the movie could have been about him, instead of... that guy played by Liam Neeson. ;P

He was such a more interesting character. And it was horrible how he died at the end ;__;

It was pretty sad. On the second viewing I really didn't have much sympathy at all with Liam Neeson's character- he seemed kind of like a simplified, romanticised grunt, while Archie seemed to have a deeper, more complicated personality.

I know! Liam Neeson's character actually annoyed me. Every scene, they had to shove in your face how "noble" he was. And that just made me hate him. Archie was much more interesting and, in my opinion, a much more realistic character.

Well said! Archie was a real bastard, of course, but Tim Roth played him with him with a lot of really nice subtle touches. I'm especially remembering the way he looked at the miniature of his mother. I wish they'd explored his character more; but I guess that's why I'd like to write this story!

By the way, what do you think of the name 'Hilary Anstruther'? I was looking for something that would have the same flavor as 'Archibald Cunningham' but of course be different. ;P

This is really beautiful! And I know all about not getting enough of those late 17th century/early 18th century fashions for men. I feel the same! And I just have to say that this is one good looking guy (I love Archibald Cunningham played by Christopher Eccleston by the way), so that only makes me like the drawing even more.

The story sounds really interesting as well. I hope you will finish it someday.

Thanks! I'm glad you like Mr. Anstruther here. But I do have a ton of stories on my plate. Right now I'm plowing through my English civil war novel, which has about 122,000 words now. By the time I'm done in a few years (heh), it'll be close to 200,000 words. GAH!
