Free 'Amina' by suburbanbeatnik Free 'Amina' by suburbanbeatnik
Don't you hate it when people put their drama all up in a revolution that isn't theirs?

Seriously, I don't know if any of you have been following the astonishing clusterfuck about the alleged disappearance of Amina Arraf, the charismatic lesbian Syrian revolutionary author of the "Gay Girl in Damascus" blog-- but, as it turns out, "Amina" is neither lesbian, Syrian, or a revolutionary. She is in fact a paunchy guy from Georgia named Tom MacMaster, who led this massive online hoax (fooling many good Middle Eastern activists) for years. More can be read about it in The Guardian, or the Washington Post.

In honor of Tom's hoax, this is a somewhat revised version of the "Free Amina" poster, which can be seen here: [link] The young lady depicted in this poster is Jelena Lecic, a Croatian woman in London-- it turns out Tom hacked into her Facebook account and stole pictures from her wholesale to use for his "Amina" persona.

Christ, what an asshole.

It looks terrible now but in a couple of years, it will be on some internet lists of 10 best pranks and everyone will laugh.

I'm not sure of that-- people still aren't laughing much about the Kaycee Nicole prank, and that happened over 10 years ago. [link]

Hmmm i see. Some people might feel used, and that is very bad feeling.

I listened to the podcast you spoke in, hearing what the guy said to defend himself just made me 20x more mad at him, everyone who spoke in the podcast were really upset and betrayed that Amina/him had been a fraud for 5 years, and he just brushes it off as "I didn't mean to hurt anyone, I didn't think anyone would actually read it".

What a load of bull, him and his wife seem like two weirdo's who hide their crazy views under some political agenda.

Haha, sorry for the rant, but I honestly would've never known about this story if you weren't interviewed by BBC. I'm glad he's getting in trouble with his uni, I hope he gets kicked out. (What is a 40 year old doing in university anyways, no offence to older students, but seriously he's so weird.)

Sorry for the long rant, just wanted to let off some steam. :D

The dude is pretty disgusting-- but at least he's in Edinburgh, where he can be penalized by his university. If he was back in Georgia, his idiot family would be cossetting him, telling him he didn't do anything wrong. (They're already telling him this on his FB page-- you can get the scoop here: [link] )

Thanks for listening to the podcast! I'm glad you got something out of it. :)

Holy shit! You're right, because only an asshole could do something like that and be okay with it and feel no harm was done. Fuck.

Yeah, it's pretty shocking... at least the woman whose photos is sold IS going to be seeking legal action, and the university in Edinburgh is going to be rescinding his computer privileges and is putting him under investigation. So there's that, at least.

I'm sure he will. He was actually seeking a book deal out of it-- the woman he emailed his fake autobiography to has posted it on her blog. You can get it here: [link]

I heard it! I think you're right. This guy is obviously out for attention - why else would he do something like this? Apparently he has too much time on his hands to do destructive things.

And then there's his wife, the Nordic chick who's the anti Zionist activist, who claims she knew ABSOLUTELY NOTHING of her husband's extensive online activities. Gah, what a line of BS! I think they were both in it together.

"Cleverness" is in the eye of the beholder. This self-indulgent moron no doubt thinks he's the epitome of sly one-upsmanship. He's cool. We're not. I guarantee he's done an incredible amount of harm. And if you tried to convince him of that fact, he'd just say that YOU are the one with the problem.
