Edward and Piers study by suburbanbeatnik Edward and Piers study by suburbanbeatnik
I really want to do a big medieval era painting, and I've been wondering whether I should do Joan of Arc and Gilles de Rais first, or Edward II, and his lover Piers Gaveston. I think the latter is winning out; I always felt poor Prince Edward was treated shabbily in "Braveheart," with how the Piers Gaveston stand-in (someone named Philip, played by the gorgeous Stephen Billington) was shoved out a window for laughs.

Edward here is a cross between Peter Hanly (an able Irish theater actor, who played the prince in the film- [link] )and the actual Edward, who can be seen here. [link] There are no pictures of Piers around, so I modelled him on Stephen Billington. He was supposed to be an incredibly handsome and arrogant knight from the southwest corner of France, and I hope I conveyed this.

Your sketchings are always beautiful. You have managed to capture their different personalities so perfectly. I especially love the design for Piers Gaveston.

I'm looking forward to it too, but first I have to finish this book cover that's been taking forever. Art directors... *sighs*

Hey now! There's room to love Eddie AND Eddie (and Piers...poor neglected Piers) It's a Medieval threesome of wide-eyed homosexual appreciation!

I can't, I have my own Edward to love up. And he needs it far worse. Poor bastard.

OMG they are gorgeous!! If I were a guy I'd turn for Piers too ;)
And they actually look period, and the right age, and I bet their clothes fit too. Great job as always!!
