Cleopatra Sketch Dump by suburbanbeatnik Cleopatra Sketch Dump by suburbanbeatnik
Some of the ugliest costumes ever made can be seen in the 1963 "Cleopatra" with Liz Taylor, Richard Burton and Rex Harrison. The designs have to be seen to be believed- almost everything in the film is unbelievably gaudy, ugly and unflattering, and moreover executed in colors that sear the eyeballs like nitric acid. I did these sketches in Prismacolor colored pencils when watching the film several years ago.

That's Liz on the left, looking extremely girdled in a budgie-blue rayon dress, and to the right is what I believe to be a sibyl/oracle of some type, donned in curtains scavenged from a tiki bar.

The art is lovely and amusing, but your commentary alone is priceless.

Thank you! I was inspired... sort of... by looking at all the stripper-style pics of Cleo online, and I was reminded of these costume sketches I did while watching the deathless 1963 film. I suppose I should invent a new word for this phenomenon.. Cleokitsch?

Cleokitsch? I like it! We could make it broader for some of the wonders that came out of the 50s-60s-70s in general...like...say...."Historykitsch."

And speaking of Historykitsch, check out these fabulously cheesy book covers I posted to my LJ some time ago... man, they're hilarious! [link]
