Cersei Lannister by suburbanbeatnik Cersei Lannister by suburbanbeatnik
I just finished reading George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones," the first book in his "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. His prose is compulsively readable, even if it's not the sort of thing I usually like to read; his heroes are a bit on the tiresome side, but his villains are so amusingly over-the-top I decided to draw one. Here's Miss Incest Queen, Cersei Lannister, who bangs her brother and bullies poor little ingenues and murders inconvenient prime ministers. I admit, her costume doesn't quite fit in the with the alternate 15th century England Martin was trying to create, but putting her in a houppelande and a hennin didn't quite seem to fit this character. Thus, she's wearing a quasi-Victorian styled RenFaire corset with Clyde Caldwell style jewelry and huge mutated Arwen sleeves. It kind of makes me wonder what the costume designer will come up with for the upcoming HBO series...

Edit: I decided to add her name, a decorative border, and added a little skull-and-crossbones over the suspiciously bubbling goblet. By the way, if anyone wants to color this digitally, that's fine with me. I'd be interested to see what you all would come up with!

Sooo awesome! I love the series and you've portrayed Cersei SO well. Storm of Swords is my favorite in the series. I too started the 2nd book immediately after finishing the 1st one and couldn't get into it. I picked it back up after a few months and loved it so much I couldn't put it down. I think with these books you need a little break between them :) I look forward to any more ASoIaF art you come up with :D

Okay, it's good to know I'm not the only one who had trouble reading ASOIF books back to back. I'll give book #2 another try later this year, then! :)

I agree with you completely. His writing is almost like a poetry. The style gets a bit more modern in the later books, and the so-called 'bad-guys' really open up. I don't want so spoil anything for you, but I will say one line...

The Lion of Lannister does not shit gold.

I like George's writing, but he kind of lost me about 3/4ths of the way through "Clash of Kings." I promptly went to wikipedia and read the plots for the rest of the books, so now I know what happened to Tywin. ;P

Thank you- I had fun doing it, especially the ridiculous corset and the more ridiculous sleeves. (How would one create sleeves like that anyway, in a real costume, without them ripping off from the weight?)

It's great to see ASoIaF-related art from you! You depicted her wonderfully. The costume is beautiful and I especially like the details on the corset.

But I feel the skull & crossbones spoil the mood a bit. The whole evil queen aura tends to lose credibility because of it.

Of course, if you decide to color it, you can always take the skull and crossbones out!

Entertaining in a sort of fantasy beach read kind of way... My problem with the series is that each book just seems to randomly end, with 5 million loose ends. I don't find it particularly satisfying.

Well, in my opinion of course. I know people who love the series and people who hate it- I'm kind of in the middle. I would have liked them better if they were shorter and more focused, instead of being these rambling, soapy mega-epics with a ginormous stable of characters that makes "War and Peace" seem like a novella.

But they're ideal to read while you're in a jury waiting room! :P

Awesome drawing!

I really like George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, and Cersei Lannister is one of my favourite characters (I guess I have a kind of love affair with incest pairings in literature).

I simply love the way you draw. You always make the characters look so interesting and their costumes always makes me smile - they are so beautiful!

I love the border, by the way, and the little skull-and-crossbones, a very nice touch!

Ah yes, I know about you and incest pairings... that's not really my thing, as you may have guessed. :P

I had a lot of fun drawing this character, but my interest in ASOIAF kind of drastically declined after I started reading "Clash of Kings." I enjoyed "Game of Thrones," but "Clash" started boring me about 3/4ths of the way through. What looked like an interesting world and a cool story in GoT started, IMO, getting kind of same-y in CoK. It's the same thing that happened to Jane Gaskell's "Atlan" series- I loved the first book, but the second seemed very much "second verse, same as the first." Another thing that bugs me about the ASOIAF series is that each book leaves a million loose ends- there's not much of a sense of closure (Gaskell had the same problem in her books too). I don't find it particularly satisfying.

Anyway, so that's my two cents worth! I'm glad you like the pic, though. :)
