A commission I did for :iconpholcidae: depicting the first (and only) meeting of Revolutionary War spies Benedict Arnold and the doomed Major John Andre. She wanted a moonlit scene on the banks of the Hudson where the two men were portrayed with dignity, since apparently the one image we could find illustrating the meeting showed Arnold and Andre skulking in the bushes.

Arnold was an interesting guy, but I think it's clear my sympathies are with Andre here. Here Arnold is telling him he's terribly sorry his ship has left him, that he'll have to go off on foot, and oh here's a map, good luck! As you can imagine, this did not end well for Andre, who was shortly captured and hanged.

It  always makes me cry why such a man of elegant and intellect  as Major  John Andre had to die as a spy

I love this, but I have mixed feelings about Andre.  About Arnold, too, I suppose, but I think I prefer Arnold to Andre!

This is gorgeous! I thought André was in plainclothes when it happened, though?

Either way, I love this. :D

I'm not sure, but in any case, it looks cooler this way.

Thanks! :D

Oh yes; that's how they built the whole "spy" case against him. If he had been in his uniform, he would not have been charged with being a spy and probably would have been kept as prisoner instead of executed.

I figure, after this scene, he put on his civvies to be safer. His hobo sack is just off camera!

LOL!

It IS wonderful to see dignity given to the usual villains. You did an excellent job w/ the moonlight and their faces.

Gorgeous presentation and expressions, you did fantastically and portrayed both men how they ought-it is always saddening when those on opposing sides are consistantly depicted as cowardly villans. Although of course their actions were traitorous, I have researched and the majority of their character is actually quite dignified and noble. Beautiful work, especially of historical figures. Ah it makes me desperately desire to commission you to draw others from this era! Maybe and I can always hope that you will draw some in the future :)

Thank you! My commissions are open at this time, so if you want to grab a slot, you're welcome. On the other hand, if your budget won't allow for a commission at this time, I'm having a post Thanksgiving Christmas sale, going on until Friday. [link]

Let me know if you're interested, and what you'd like! :)

It is a really lovely way in which the scene is portrayed, both with the play of light and darkness as well as the peaceful yet strained mood that the scene portrays. I've enjoyed it quite a lot , also all the little details. The image seems a mixture of realistic and yet with a style of its own!

*looks up John André on Google* ...American revolution history, I have underestimated you.
Their poses and the scenery make me think of something after a period print; also, dignity and impending doom and 18th century uniforms are one of the best combinations ever.

I know I commented already, but I wanted to leave one here, too - You really did great on this. You can feel the tense atmosphere. Especially with how Andre is turning away, as he wants to get out of there, knowing the consequences if they were discovered. (And of course they were later.) Even though technically the Redcoats were the enemy, part of me felt a bit bad for Andre.

Again - terrific job on capturing this historical moment so beautifully. :) :+fav:

Thank you so much! I'm glad you'd like it. Thanks also for the lovely comment-- I not only wanted to create something lovely and dignified, but also tense and creepy. Night scenes can be difficult, but they can also be very rewarding.

You're very welcome. Those night scenes can indeed be difficult. I have trouble with them constantly, but you made it look so easy. Great job again :)
