Bellerophon and Pegasus by suburbanbeatnik Bellerophon and Pegasus by suburbanbeatnik
This was the first painting I did for my big project last fall-- illustrating "Bellerophon and Pegasus" by Liana Robinson, for Compass Media. It's the Greek myth about the hero who tamed Pegasus. (It wasn't Perseus, that was a later story.)

Anyway, horses-- especially flying horses-- are really hard to paint.

I just want to say I love your depictions of Bellerophon. He's my favorite of the Greek myth heroes.

Very authentic in a way. Like it's not greek urn art, but if the Greeks had Renaissance advanced art techniques, they'd look something like this.

Oh my gosh, you painted this??? It's exceptional! I couldn't do anything like that in a million years! Add to the fact that I love Greek myths (the Bellerophon story was in a book of legends we had when I was little) and I'm going to go and favorite all of these!

Thank you! I did this a couple of years ago, but I'm still quite proud of it. (Drawing flying horses is a bitch!) I have a few copies of the book-- I believe it is available for purchase through their publishing office here in California. www.compasspub.com/english/cus…

I took Bellerophon's costume from the Greek man illustrated by Victor Ambrus from "The Anatomy of Costume" by Robert Selbie. It's an old book, but you should be able to get it at the library. Here's some pictures here-- [link] -- yet none of the Greek people, unfortunately.

Oooh, I feel your pain! Every time I have to draw a horse I get a slight sinking feeling =P But you did a great job, he's a nice balance of horsy-ness and slight other-worldly-ness. =) The blue sky is gorgeous, too.

Thank you! I am really pleased with how it turned out. When I finally update my own website, I'd like to use this as the splash page. :)
