Belle by suburbanbeatnik Belle by suburbanbeatnik
Look, more Beauty and the Beast fanart for Valentine's Day!

I decided that Gaston-- [link] -- needed a companion piece. So I drew Belle. I couldn't stand the idea of drawing her in her generic peasant outfit and ponytail, so I put her in a simple but fashionable robe a l'anglaise from the late 1770s or early '80s. Her hair is loose and flowing, like the Gainsborough portrait of the Linley sisters. [link]

Belle definitely seems to fit into the 1780s, I think. I can just see her in some small village in Poitou or elsewhere, sitting under a tree, reading Rousseau's Julie and sighing over the love of Julie and Saint-Preux. And then Gaston would come and annoy her. I am sure he would make plenty of disparaging remarks about Rousseau and other such wild, radical authors, while eying her bosom.

UPDATE: Here's a painting of Belle in another 1780s dress-- a rococo version of the famous yellow ballgown. [link]

OH YES. I got the BatB artbook for Christmas, and Disney was originally going in more this direction as far as costuming goes, and Gaston was going to be a French fop, and so on. Would have been interesting. And I would hope a scene like that would be included, that would have been hilarious :XD:

The artbook sounds cool-- I'd like to see that at some point. It's too bad that they didn't go for a more 18th century inspired look... I would have really loved that.

Thanks! When I drew her I imagined she was being harassed again by Gaston-- perhaps he was asking her what she was reading. It's all in my comments. ;P

Well, the dress she's wearing in the sketch is a day dress-- not really appropriate for the evening. But it would have been nice to see her wearing something more 18th century styled, rather than that yellow crinolined thing. I don't know many brunettes that look good in yellow, do you?

I bought the diamond edition of Beauty and the Beast, and in the deleted scenes, there was the original opening that they were planning to use while the movie was still in development. And this was almost exactly like what they were planning to have belle be like. Also in the alternate, they had it take place more around 1780's. I thought it was weird how right on you got this drawing without ever seeing that alternate opening.

It's beautiful!

I managed to track down the alternate opening on Youtube, and wow, you're right-- my version of Belle does look a lot like that. And I had no idea it existed! Thanks for the lovely comment. :)

This is so beautiful! I love that you put her ain different sort of outfit and hairdo than we see in the movie. She also has that impertinent expression on her face that really suits the characters. And she is beautiful!
