Belle by suburbanbeatnik Belle by suburbanbeatnik
Look, more Beauty and the Beast fanart for Valentine's Day!

I decided that Gaston-- [link] -- needed a companion piece. So I drew Belle. I couldn't stand the idea of drawing her in her generic peasant outfit and ponytail, so I put her in a simple but fashionable robe a l'anglaise from the late 1770s or early '80s. Her hair is loose and flowing, like the Gainsborough portrait of the Linley sisters. [link]

Belle definitely seems to fit into the 1780s, I think. I can just see her in some small village in Poitou or elsewhere, sitting under a tree, reading Rousseau's Julie and sighing over the love of Julie and Saint-Preux. And then Gaston would come and annoy her. I am sure he would make plenty of disparaging remarks about Rousseau and other such wild, radical authors, while eying her bosom.

UPDATE: Here's a painting of Belle in another 1780s dress-- a rococo version of the famous yellow ballgown. [link]

That's not bad.  It's less obvious that it's Belle than your Gaston sketch, but then again, Belle doesn't have the same sort of distinctive, exaggerated features.  She's more generically pretty.

I bet this could be turned into a gorgeous painting.

Thanks. I would like to do another painting of Belle someday, based on this drawing. My painting of Belle in her ball gown dates from 2011 and I think I could do a much better version now...

Do  you know creeps me out about a woman looking like that?, with their faces showing that with?

Whenever something bad happens or something goes totally wrong, a woman wouldn't get mad or angry, and never gets scared or wants to cry even if she is taken hostage, or she is yelled at. She always stays all calm, cool under pressure, smiley, and things like them.

I was talking about a woman's emotions. Look at her.

Just because she isn't shown as mad, angry, scared, or crying in THIS PARTICULAR PICTURE is no reason to pretend that she NEVER shows any emotion.  It's a portrait piece.  There's no action going on in the picture.  If she looked like this in a picture that depicted her as being yelled at or taken hostage, then you would have a valid point.  As it is, you're being unreasonable.

I love this! It's one of the few pieces I've seen that doesn't use the same animated style yet still manages to look like Belle. In fact, were the picture unlabeled I would still be able to recognize her and that's difficult to do. It's all in the face -- the layout and the expression.

Also, it's funny that you mention Gaston staring at her bosom because one if the first things I noticed was that you didn't give her a hugely exaggerated bust like most fan artists have done. If anything, her bust seems considerably more modest in size than in the movie. But I think that works better.

Indeed your portrayal in general looks better. I agree that the 18th century style works much better for Belle. I wish I knew more about it. I also like how you have her fair slightly frazzled. She's supposed to be a beauty, but one who is naturally beautiful if not necessarily well put together when she goes to town. Not inelegant, she just doesn't emphasize looks.

Thank you-- what a lovely comment! I'm glad you like it. It makes me think I should draw Belle more often. She really is one of the more interesting princesses. (Especially since she doesn't have the freakishly large eyes of the latest characters... :P)

I just wanted to comment on this because I really, really love the way you drew Belle's face here.
A lot of Beauty and the Beast fanart of Belle, lovely as it is, often fails to REALLY capture her face just right. What I mean is, in the movie Belle has a way of emoting that is noticeably different from most Disney heroines. She raises her eyebrow in bemusement or confusion, she rolls her eyes; overall, Belle is a wry girl, probably not out of place commenting snarkily on a movie or casually mentioning her opinion on a popular novel at a bookstore with her friends. It's wonderfully unique among traditional Disney princesses, smiling contently and placid. It's part of why I loved her so much as a kid (and still do.) She's unafraid to express her opinion or dissatisfaction.
Belle is an oddity even among her fellow princesses, and I love it when I come across fanart of her that captures this.

Thanks! I do enjoy her as a character. I would eventually like to do more Disney fanart, but I haven't had the time to do any art that doesn't pay.

What other Disney heroines do you like?

Throw a prince magically turned into a Beast, and you have the entire movie right there.
