Despite my desire to produce a lot of speed paints, my skill level and lack of motivation (because of the skill level) come up wanting.

However, recently I learned a new technique from [link] 's art, and this is my first emulation of it.

In essence: block in a scene in with 3D CG, and use a graphics editor to put the polishing details on it.

I'm not 100% satisfied with the result of this, but as a learning experience, it's been a blast. It hasn't exactly been a speedy experience (mostly because I've had to relearn how to use Sketchup), but I am satisfied that it captured the overall tone and some of the colour pallet I wished to convey.

The one success (and reason why I recommend this technique) is that the 3D CG simplifies the process of not only placing elements in the frame, but also finding the most dramatic viewpoint for the image.
