Kiba Bones

Here it is! My Halloween illustration for 2018! It's my black Manx, Kiba, looking into a pond that only reflects his skeleton!

I came up with this idea because I wanted to do a different theme than I have in the past. So far, I had done pumpkins and ghosts (always with Kiba as the main focus--he's a black cat, after all). The next Halloween theme that came to mind was skeletons.  After some brainstorming, I arrived at this idea.

This is the first time I've done a painting of a reflection in a body of water. I'm glad I did my due diligence and researched what it looks like in real life!  I definitely wouldn't have been able to paint this convincing pond without that knowledge.

This is also the first time I've applied a color wash on the entire painting to create a tonal atmosphere and harmonize the colors. It worked better than I imagined! Every new color I applied matched perfectly with all the rest, thanks to the underlying tones.

My Patreon subscribers will be receiving copies of this painting as their next reward. You can use the link below to join them and get your own beautiful reproduction of this work F2U - Kaomoji 003

I livestreamed some of the work on this piece. You can watch the recordings here:

Great colors!!! This is easy on the eyes. His reflection is awesome, the cartoon ripples are a nice touch.

Thank you! I think doing a color wash on the page first really helped ensure every subsequent color would definitely harmonize. Painting the pond was a lot of work but worth it for the satisfying end result!
