Blyss by stratosmacca Blyss by stratosmacca
Continuing on with the digital painting thing... this is Peter Cushing as Dr. Blyss from the Hammer film Night Creatures (or Captain Clegg as it was known in the UK).

It's actually my favorite Hammer Horror film, even though it's not really "horror." It has a real Cobra/Springfield vibe to it (G.I. Joe fans will know what I mean), and Peter Cushing acts as its Cobra Commander-- but with a secret past...

It's a really great sort of hidden gem type of film, with a great story and great acting all around. I think this could possibly be Peter Cushing's strongest performance ever. Plus, he swings from a chandelier. What more could you want?

I never saw "Captain Clegg" but I have seen the Disney version "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh" with Patrick Magoohan as "Dr. Syn"/Captain Clegg/"The Scarecrow" as an ex-pirate turned leader of a gang of smugglers.  There was an earlier version of the story with George Arliss in 1937 called "Dr. Syn".

Cushing Fan, here. Wow quite the description you give of Cushing in this part. That leap and swing sure was a great bit of action he did too. :D I rather like this part as well. I adore how almost all his parts you can see the real gentle man through the character.

Awesome tribute to a hidden classic!!! Your comments were dead-on, too--especially mentioning that Cushing swung from a chandelier! He was a very physical actor, and my jaw still drops when I see some of the stunts he pulled off; the man was in his sixties in Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell, but he jumped onto David Prowse's back!!! Fantastic...we will never see his like again.

Most underrated Hammer film, I think. Great film, nice plot, Peter Cushing is one of his best roles, young Oliver Reed, Yvonne Romain being her beautiful self and Michael Ripper has bigger role than usually. What more can one ask from a Hammer movie? Pic is awesome. FAVE

What a great picture! Does Cushing play a preacher-who's-really-a-commando?

Well, by "Cobra Commander" I mean that he is basically the leader. In G.I. Joe, Cobra infiltrated and took over a town called Springfield. To anyone visiting there, it looked like a normal town-- but behind the scenes, there was all sorts of mischief goin' on ;)

Yep! They had to change his name from Dr. Syn to Dr. Blyss to avoid rights issues with Disney at the time. But the story is more or less based on the original Syn stuff-- though I prefer Hammer's tidier version better... but then again, I am biased ;)

And yes, I definitely owe you an e-mail!

Swinging from stuff you're not supposed to swing from has got to be one of the most amusing parts of the action genre. I've never heard of that movie, but I think I'll look it up--it sounds interesting.

Rock on. I mean, really, who hasn't wanted to swing from a chandelier? I wish I had one here so I could use it to swing from whenever I wanted to cross the room.

That would be awesome. Someday I'm going to build a house with all those things, like chandeliers to swing from and tower rooms. :)
