Description

I'm willing to call this one a stroke of luck.

After several awed minutes taking shot after shot of the condors swooping over my head, the great birds dispersed a little - and I decided that I should try for a little more variety in the images I was taking. As luck would have it, at that very moment I was alerted to the fact that a young condor had landed on a protruding rock just a few metres from the barriers keeping us tourists at a safe distance from the birds (or, rather more importantly, the cliff-edge).

I was shooting this first bird, when another alighted alongside it. And no sooner had the second bird landed - whilst still folding its wings, in fact - a third came careening into the frame. I pressed the shutter, and this is the result.

Incredibly, the cramped landing spot didn't cause any problems for the condors - none of them were knocked off by one another's clumsy landings. Once they had settled they stood there like three living chess-pieces, arranged side-by-side and almost completely still until they eventually departed, one by one.

Like the other shots from Cruz del Condor, I took this with my 70-300mm VR lens. I've adjusted the contrast slightly in Photoshop, but that's it. Unfortunately I don't think there's much I can do about the clump of rock and grass to the left!

More information on the Andean Condor, and other shots from the same location and time:

I was hoping the that title would be a play on of three's a crow-d... ignoring the bad jokes that is a nice picture. :D
