Kalayaan 4: GioP's bold, unprecedented move
I'm almost 100% sure of this -- no one has ventured even close to the territory the latest issue of 's Kalayaan* now explores.
Without giving out any spoilers, I think it's safe to say that the dilemma the hero now faces hasn't even been touched on in Western comics. And it's brilliant that way, apart from being an incredible though gutsy gamble.
Many stories today would open up discussions about women's identity and conceptions of self-worth. What gioparedes has done with his narrative provides an opportunity to examine the male concept of self, moreso that of the Asian male.
There is a value system that the story brings to light that makes one look hard at what it takes to diminish a person, to diminish his own view of himself, or to disregard everything that he is entirely.
I don't know how other readers will react to this development, but I do know this. It was immensely brave of Gio to take the story in this direction, and I'm talking of the kind of courage that would make a lesser individual turn tail and run to the hills.
As a comics creator, he's also shown the determination to continue improving his craft; raising the bar, so to speak, with every issue. For that alone, I'll always have complete faith in him and his work.
He also said in this issue that he hopes to create 100 issues of Kalayaan. To that, I say simply -- Lead on, Gio, lead on
*Kalayaan is the Filipino word for "freedom"

I am a Proud Bayan Knights Groupie
I've always said I'm a fan-girl more than anything else; the sparse contents of my gallery would attest to that ;p A few weeks ago, though, I was given a chance to do a bit more than wave adoringly at the artists I admire. ~gammaknight (https://www.deviantart.com/gammaknight) started it all when he called for local comic book artists to join him in producing a title that would unite their original creations -- superheroes all -- in a single publication, Bayan Knights. :thumb95532145: Many of these heroes pay tribute to the caped and costumed idols of old, but at the same time these are heroes who have to stand up for a country, a world grown more cruel, incomprehensible, and
Tagger, Tagger Burning Bright...
I haven't updated in months. And I've just ruined a William Blake poem :XD: But, hey, ~gioparedes (https://www.deviantart.com/gioparedes) tagged me and I'm honor-bound to tag other nice people after I've inflicted the following replies on all of you ;p 1. What do you want for your birthday? - A Shards of Alara booster box :D 2. Who will be your next kiss? - Next question, Emil... ;p 3. When was the last time you went to the mall? - Last saturday. Hung out with the guys as usual. edtadeo (https://www.deviantart.com/edtadeo) visited us. Hi, Ed! :D 4. Are you wearing socks right now? - Going to quote gioparedes (https://www.deviantart.com/gioparedes) on this - "Why are you interested in my socks?" :giggle: 5. How did you spend your summ
The Day I Thought Ed T was Lan M
This is just a little fan-girl story :) I became a huge fan of Lan Medina after I saw his work in Bill Willingham's Fables. Little did I know that years down the line I would actually meet... his wife ;) It was on the last day of Glasshouse Graphics' 2006 Comics Creation Seminar and my friends were hanging around outside the venue. Suddenly, a long-haired lady whom I will always remember for her big, warm smile greeted the guys and they started chatting. With her was a slender fellow whose long curly hair was tied back in a ponytail. I'll admit, the words "Jesus Christ Superstar" came to mind :D The guys, sweet adorable pals who mean the
