Pop Quiz and Twilight met at MathCon in Vanhoover, an event concerning only the best minds in all of Equestria and beyond. Math, science, magic--the works! Twilight went there on an...admittedly forced vacation with Spike, but had no idea she'd meet one of the most brilliant ponies of all. Here, she wasn't the Princess of Friendship or whatever. Here, she was a professor like she'd studied all her life to be, and Pop Quiz helped her feel like a student again. Who else could just go on about quantum magic waves and how they affect the disposition of climate change?! It was amazing!

Despite their spark (and the distance; Pop Quiz actually lived in Vanhoover at the time and was finishing his doctorate), Twilight had to leave and they wouldn't meet again, ironically, until Cranky and Matilda's wedding. They reconnected in a flash of squeals and cheers.

After the wedding, he invited Twilight to come check out the bigger inventions he couldn't bring to the con at his place. She gladly, eagerly, and quite loudly obliged. At Quiz's place, he proudly showed off all of his inventions made with math, science...not a drop of magic here. No cutting corners! It took weeks just for him to show how they all worked. And...well, while most people he had showed figured it was a bit ridiculous to do all this on his own, Twilight was amazed. Dazzled. Not because he was an Earth Pony, but because he was a genius. But Pop Quiz felt there was that barrier between them...he was an Earth pony that always stayed holed up spending precious time working with tools that could barely fit in his mouth while an alicorn like her could probably whip something up like this in a flash. But that just wasn't true. She admired his work, sure, but she admired HIM above all. His kookiness, his persistence, and well...she decided to ask him out on a date when he didn't.

Best decision ever.

Pop Quiz has been a nerd ever since he was young, asking all the big and annoying questions. He was the one always asking "why? why? why?" and while people often thought he was questioning authority, it was always much more. He actually wanted to know...well, why? He was also fascinated by earth pony machines that unicorns could never quite understand, since well, they had their magic to help them along. Peeling potatoes isn't as easy when you're an earth pony, after all. He also noticed that most grand scholars were, well, unicorns. He didn't find that to be fair. Earth ponies were smart too, and could do a lot! Not only to help invent things that ease inconveniences, but true, actual science that could revolutionize the world! At the wee age of 10 years old, he made this realization, and set out to his life as an inventor. Now the question was....what was he going to make? And how was he going to make it here in rural Fillydelphia?

He spent a lot of time holed up in his own little world, always trying to make new ideas for new things. He didn't have many friends, only dabbling with his buddies in sleepovers, Ogres and Oubliettes, and of course, using his friends as test subjects. Luckily the few friends he had were dragon friends and pony friends alike to help him with his inventions ("presenting, the Auto-heater! It'll make anything hot instantly!") that usually ended up blowing up in his face ("maybe we should use less fire next time"). But as they grew, things became less fun, more real... no, we don't have time to play with your little doohickey, why don't you try and imagine something real?... None of these inventions are ever going to work. He never believed it for a minute. Well, maybe sometimes, when he went bankrupt and was kicked out of his house since all his gadgets took up too much space.... when he was waiting tables so he could get enough money to pay rent at a friends so he could have a place of residency just to sign up for college....it was a hard road getting to that doctorate, but he couldn't have been happier. NOW people would take him seriously....right?

Twilight Sparkle
I...don't think I need to explain Twilight's life LOL. But I am retconning some things: NO there is no friendship school or whatever...however, she does oversee a rehabilitation facility for all creatures that she and Celestia have built in unicorn range. It's a self functioning town where creatures with problems go if they want a change, and a change for the better. If they feel they have nowhere else to fit in. There's all the resources one needs, and the entry fee is small. It's to get you back on your feet and back out into the world, and the success rate is phenomenal. The victims of Our Town have gone there, and so do many other creatures from all over trying to work out the true meaning of friendship.

Twilight herself, on the other hand...would probably benefit from this town. She's always had anxiety and slight OCD, especially given her position, and her fear of failing. She wants nothing more but the best for the best. So she teaches at Celestia's school of magic from time to time, and even alongside Mrs. Cheerilee to assist with the older ponies. She's a workaholic for sure, and she likes it that way. But she's been learning to focus that into more private projects, and in her personal life instead of everyone else's. Taking on apprentices has been a life long dream of hers...I sure hope it doesn't go wrong!
