Yuletide now is come;
Let's all prepare for mirth,
Which fills the Sky and Earth
To greet the sun's rebirth!
The earth-fruits in the fields,
Where'er they still do lie
Rejoin their quiet mother,
Until the  sun grows nigh.
Swift breezes waft the white snow,
Whose beauty rare attires
The Earth as she lies sleeping
Beneath the Yule log fires.

Wand'ring frozen Earth,
'midst Oak and Ash and Thorn
The longest night upon us,
E'en stout hearts makes forlorn.
Our hands are joined together
Our fingers intertwine
Our circle draws the dawning
that will the  stars outshine.
Swift breezes waft the white snow,
Whose beauty rare attires
The Earth as she lies sleeping
Beneath the Yule log fires.

Time has come upon us:
Great brightness now does soar
The sun returns to warm us
And cheer our hearts once more.
The light has come from darkness
Its warm rays make it clear:
The Earth will yet awaken
To nurture us through the year.
Swift breezes waft the white snow,
Whose beauty rare attires
The Earth as she lies sleeping
Beneath the Yule log fires.
The Pagan Irish Carol is a Pagan-oriented adaptation of a 16th- or 17th- century Irish yuletide carol. Sheet music and MIDI files can be downloaded from here.

I really like the poem aspect of this piece. But I was trying to sing it and it has been a while since I've read music. But I don't think punctuation gets it's own note. Like the semicolen or comma you have underneath the quater note in the second measure......it should be part of "come." Then you need either another word there or change the eigth note to a dotted quarter note. But then that becomes a problem in the third verse and the whole rhythem just fals apart....i'm going to shut up now.

Hi Tasty,

You're technically right. The music software I use doesn't show dotted slurs (that's for when two notes are for one word in some stanzas and two words in another stanza). It allows for them, so that the words show up correctly in the stanzas, but it doesn't show the dotted slur or the underline which you would normally see. So, when you see punctuation under a note, continue the previous syllable on to the note above the punctuation as if there were a slur there. For example, in the first phrase, "come" in stanza 1 and "Earth" in stanza 2 are slurred between the F and the A, but in stanza 3, the F is for the syllable "pon" and the A is for the syllable "us". :)

Very interesting song. The imagery is very good. *Kicks the Earth gently to see if she'll wake up a little early this year so I can stop freezing my ass off*

Is this the first of many? As I recall you have a number of ditties for the winter holidays.

No other winter adaptations, just some general-purpose ones. Though I have been musing about a version of "Joy to the World"...
