My Bio

I grew up in San Jose, CA, at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay Area. I got tired of the dry, and moved up to Portland, OR, where it's green and moist. I like temperate rain forests, so it's a good fit. I like the motto "Keep Portland Weird", too, although it isn't nearly as weird as that motto implies. I have a degree in Business Economics, with a side order of Mechanical Engineering, and Graphic Design for dessert, although I never finished all of the curriculum because I started my own business, and just didn't have the time. (There were two of us doing the whole suite of user guides for a medical laser company's entire product line.)

I worked for Xerox for a while, as a technical illustrator, primarily on the service side. I got to illustrate all of the service manuals for the desktop printer division. Then I got laid off (along with many others) when the high mucky mucks decided they wanted a higher share price.

Then I got involved in a sustainability group, where I hoped to work with aqua/hydroponics, solar, and wind technologies. It didn't work out, as they were more talk than action. But as a result of it, I got involved in construction and home inspection, which is what I now do (mostly home inspection, I don't swing a hammer much any more).

I also gamemaster a tabletop roleplaying game for some friends, which takes up much of my free time. There is a lot of worldbuilding and writing (including writing up the adventure log (a recounting of the play sessions) as a narrative story. You can find information about the world I've built on my WorldAnvil site, as well as the write-ups of the game sessions: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/scourge-of-shards-schpdx

Hah! Would make some fun wallpaper for a kid's bedroom.

[AF] A loop of silly

There is a campground in Yellowstone National Park that has bison just walk through the campsites in the morning. That was some wake up call when an animal bigger than your car is four feet from your tent, just moseying by nibbling at the grass.

The marriage ceremony is cribbed from an elven marriage ceremony written by Kulana Angelfire Miriel.

I've bookmarked your list. I will try to spend some time exploring them when I can!

(Natural History of an Alien, a BBC2/Discovery Channel mockumentary from 1998. It has Epona in it. And I am the guy talking about the Uthers, getting my 30 seconds of fame.

This story began when I found that I needed to actually detail out how someone can gain a level in Magery in the game that I am running as a GM. To that end, I came up with a basic set of conditions (aka, game rules), then wrote the story around it, using a character I had designed. Cathryn is what I call a "logistics mage", a person without the ability to cast magic originally, but is trained to eventually be able to.

This gives them what GURPS calls "Magery 0", which is the ability to see and manipulate mana, but without the bonuses to do so that higher levels of Magery offer. These kinds of mages have access to a more limited spell list: that is, those not requiring Magery 1 or higher as prerequisites. However, most of the spells that the military wants them to cast don't have those more difficult requirements anyway.

The main spells a mage of this type learns are not really combat-oriented spells; they are the ones used to help fortify the camp, or make conditions in the camp more favorable, or to make or cook food that is better than rations. In a sense, these kinds of mages make the soldiers have better morale, being more effective due to that rather than using magic on the soldiers directly.
