Ancilla Tilia, Los Angeles 2010

The ultimate natural lighting condition for me is an overcast sky. That lighting brings out the tonal range I’m most fond of and ultimately defines my black and white style. This look originated when I started shooting in Chicago where the skies often lacked sun. Once I moved to sunny Los Angeles, it was hard to duplicate this look except in deep shade. On this particular day shooting with Dutch model Ancilla Tilia, the sky clouded up and gave me a rare chance to work under my favorite kind of light. Photographed with the Mamiya 645.
