Castaway by steve-burg Castaway by steve-burg
Travelers often have time to catch up on their reading... especially if there are unexpected delays.

This started out as a "speed painting" but it took far too long in the end...

I'm pretty sure that was an influence - the guy with the sun umbrella :)

Agree - first impression is "hey, that's a crashed spaceship", and then you see the umbrella, and then you go "aaahhhh..... Riddic!"

There's something about putting up an umbrella that says "Well, I guess rescue isn't coming any time soon. Might as well try and get comfortable". I liked that bit in Pitch Black - although I think it has an older tradition. I'm pretty sure it was in "Flight of the Phoenix" (about an airplane crashed in the Sahara) Pitch Black brought it to Sci-Fi :D

Actually, they should crash each single spaceship in movie :D For example that huge destroyer from Star Wars, would look perfect crashed on some planet :D

Looks like that ship's not going anywhere anytime soon. Well, at least the pilot has got something to read, so perhaps it's not going to be that bad...

But yeah - very nice decayed look in this one. I like it - I guess it has something to do with the "aesthetics of decay"...

The pilot is on vacation - unless something is hiding in the sand :)!

Decay is always fascinating...

There's this Stephen King story (sorry, can't remember the title) about two astronauts who crash on some strange desert world with sand everywhere.

Eventually it turns out that the sand itself is some kind of alien lifeform...

...The story is Beachworld - I just Googled it, and the all-powerful Wikipedia has an article about it: [link]

Great sense of humour and GREAT detail on this! I love how beaten and worn the surface of the ship looks!

It's fun to add humor to what would ordinarily be a fairly grim scenario :)
It was a lot of fun building up the ravaged surface of the ship, and trying to add small accents of color...

Thanks! The Pitch Black connection is definitely there - it's one of the few movies that really features a crashed spaceship. For me, the fascination goes back to the original Planet of the Apes series - the whole beginning before you even see an ape :) - that really affected me quite strongly.

Really cool sci-fi image. It reminds me of Firefly and Cowboy Bebop. Shipwrecks are cool. Futuristic shipwrecks are even better.

Truth be told, the inspiration was my memory of the crashed ship in "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" - I haven't seen it in long years, but it made an impression at the time. I have always loved crashed spaceships :D

You have a good point there, although I've only seen the movie they made ("Serenity"). One of these days I'll have to make time and catch up on the series :)
