The City of Travar by SteffenBrand The City of Travar by SteffenBrand
Travar as the greatest City of Barsaive (the world of Earthdawn). It was build as a heavily fortified circle which used to have a protective magical shield around it. This was incredible to work on since a 3-Point-Perspective isn’t usually what I would recommend on a city especially of that size. But I wanted to do this, we go in a new direction with it, and I’m happy to do more!

There is an article in German here about the making of, a few steps and so on: www.ulisses-spiele.de/neuigkei…

And here is an English version: www.cartographersguild.com/sho…

If you have any questions, let me know - happy to answer. =)
(c) Ulisses Spiele & Distribution, 2017

EDIT: Yesterday, my map of Travar was voted best for the annual award for 'For Best City, Town, or Village Map' on CG. I'm truly happy, deeply honored, and inspired by all other entries. Thank you all so much! Link: www.cartographersguild.com/sho…
Quote: "It really boggles the mind when you come across a map like this, something so intricate, so well-crafted, and so magnificent, you can't quite believe one man created it. Well, one man did, and that man is Steffen Brand. Truly a labor of love, Travar is so rich in detail you can spend hours poring over it. The folks who commissioned it were lucky indeed."

Man, this map never cease to amaze. You did great work on this.
It actually boggles the mind. I'm busy with a top down city drawn by hand and it is a crazy amount of work, but to do one with such small detail in perspective... Respect.

Yes, it was a tough time sitting on this and there were a few times I didn't want to continue, tbh. But in the end, it payed off. Thank you so much, I really appreciate your comment if not for that reason alone, to have in mind hard work can be appreciated. =)

I am glad you got through it. It is a work of art. :)

The thing that is an insane grind for me at moment is the shadows, but it is so going to worth it doing it right. Hehe.

What map are you busy with lately?

Yeah, I noticed your project over at CG, I understand what you mean :D But sometimes, yeah, it's worth it to push oneself just to improve / accomplish something.

I'm on different projects right now at work (I can't talk about them, sorry) and privately, 2 projects focus all my attention. One is futuristic, the other one is more like medieval india (but fantasy).

Oh cool! Can I ask someone as weathered in city maps as you, do you like the style I am heading for with my city? It is quite the experiment.
No need to apologise, I completely understand NDA, it really helps.

If you don't mind me asking, where do you work? :)

I work full time for Ulisses Spiele, Europes largest Pen-&-Paper publisher as an Illustrator / AD in my area of expertise. I will be completely honest with you, I hope you don't mind: The style you went for is one that can work, but requires a lot of work to polish up. Shading was probably a good idea, but you shouldn't exclusively rely on that to bring it to the value-range / contrast it should have. Many cartographers tend to have very dark maps from all the texturing with multiply, but sometimes less is more, if it is on point. There are maps that function well with low contrast (I did a lot of them myself), but lately I think even those would pop a lot more if I had to re-do them today. I hope this helps... :D

Hehe, just today as I worked on the last of the cast shadows for the buildings, I thought the map too dark, so I upped the brightness contrast of the original drawing.

The city is probably the most manual labor intensive map I've ever done, so I get what you are saying with takes a lot to polish up. :P
Apart from brightening up the map, any tips you could throw my way for this particular map?
(By the way, thank you very much for taking the time on replying!)

Well, having figured these things out for yourself is a good sign that you are on the right track then. I'm not all-wise, sometimes things just work even if they are way apart from what would be expected to work (meaning: I could be that your image works regardless of what my tips are). I don't have any particular tips on this piece in specific aside from what I already said. Keeping it updated / posted and considering the tips of professionals of CG is probably a good idea. =)

Greetings,

I just happened across this and wanted to say thank you. Both FWD and I loved what you did. We both had limited top down views and you truly took our vision and brought it to life. I could not have asked for a better representation of our Travar.

Thank you so much, Graymane. That means a lot to me and yes, this really was something I was untied to realize what I had in mind.
I'm glad it brought such emotions to people. =)

Beautiful! I truly love your work! The details are amazing and the whole work looks like is alive!

I know nothing of the setting of what I suppose is a kind of RPG, but may I just ask why on position 5.2 and the surroundng area (one is even over the towergate on the right) there are some boats?

Thank you so much, Shaidrim! =) Yes, you may of cause ask me anything - the boats were hard to handle to include at all, but I decided to do so because the world features flying ships I used sparely especially on this tower because it is the main hub of aeronauts. 6.3 and 5.4 btw are two more of these towers open for flying ships. =)

Thank you for your reply! Now make o lot more sense. I guessed that could be an option but knowing nothing of that world and the ships looking totally like the ones at sea, I preferred to ask you directly!

once again, amazing work!

hey,

Yay! Yes! Mages are fun. Also I like the concept of playing a really young city-Person who really doesn't like camping and being on adventures crawling dungeons and so on. :-P

Danke dir! =)
