"Ostalgie is a German term referring to nostalgia for aspects of life in East Germany. It is derived from the German words Ost (east) and Nostalgie (nostalgia).

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the German reunification that followed a year later, many of the symbols of the German Democratic Republic were swept away. Almost all GDR brands (DDR in German) of products disappeared from the stores and were replaced by Western products. However, after some time most of the Eastern Germans began to miss more or less aspects of their former lives (like culture or the known brand marks). Ostalgie particularly refers to the nostalgia for aspects of regular daily life and culture in the former GDR, which disappeared after reunification.

The Trabant was the most common vehicle in East Germany, and was also exported to countries both inside and outside the Eastern Bloc. Due to its outdated and inefficient two-stroke engine (which produced poor fuel economy compared to its low power output and thick, smoky exhaust), and production shortages, the Trabant was regarded with derisive affection as a symbol of the extinct former East Germany and of the fall of the Eastern Bloc."

The red hot metal rear brings out, by contrast, the mellow blue plastic design of this car from Duckburg (and the general sexual tranquillity of Disneyland [although I have my doubts about Donald]) — übercute!

Beautiful Girl but, STUPID Car!
I was stationed in Bamberg, West Germany in the Winter of 1989.
I was able to visit Liepzig in the DDR. I assure you there was nothing about the DDR that was worth remembering.
I saw so many of these Trabant Junks being pushed by there owners and, left on the side of the road.

Ostalgie, is a silly thing that any who lived in the DDR would never willingly wish to remember.

Next time, feature a impressive German Auto for this Gorgous Girl to show off with!
Michael

Your English is better than my German.

Michael

Seems people always look back on the past with fond memories of simpler times.  We tend to forget the harsher things and dwell on what was good.

I know a man from former DDR, his verdict is that "If you had no high expectations of life", as he puts it, it was much better back then. Living was easy and inexpensive.

Time was more relaxed, but system was unjust, socialism always leads to tyranny at the end. Freedom of choice is always above anything else, but problem of now is not freedom, but lack of it, with illusion of choice.
