Asgir of the marsh by Steelpengu Asgir of the marsh by Steelpengu
Character design two for Neolucky's Kill the King contest. The other design being Zarastra Deimos. This is the first line art I've posted in a while, I felt that anything more would distract or somehow mar the details at work here. I hope to color him before I submit him. Perhaps do another picture or two, as this one kind of cuts off at the bottom. The actual picture has the end of the second sword on it, it just didn't scan in.

I wanted the standard warrior here, with a twist. Being a big fan of all things nordic, namely battle axes, war hammers, and valkyries, I wanted my second design to have that kind of flavor to it. I wanted him to regsiter Norse without viking, like 13th Warrior. There a lot of Samwise Didier influence here, and if you don't know who he is I garuntee you probably know his stuff. He does the character designs for Diablo 2 and Warcraft. He also does the cover art for my favorite metal band Hammerfall. The Samwise influence is most prominent in the big, heavy greaves that no human being should be able to walk in. I specifically wanted the pattern on them to be basically tribal but reminiscent an angel. Kind of a contrast with the rest of him!

I had considered giving him fancier swords, but felt his design had enough going on that he could have just big mean war cleavers. I like the suggestion that he can flip them around, both above and under hand. Putting chains on them had come to my mind, then I scratched it without a second thought. Too much like Kratos from God of War, who is the epitome of masculine ass kicker. I actually had a deffinite story for this guy going in too, which probably helped with his design being more specific. I went back to my grounding in classical mythology for him, conceiving him as a sort of Norse Achilles or Hercules, both victims of their own vanity.

Artist: Bo Bradshaw

Character: Asgir Carr (of the marsh)

Sex: Male

Race: Northlander

Height: 6 feet, 2 inches

Weight: 242 lbs.

Hair: blonde

Eyes: blue

Skin: sun worn

Markings: a smear of face paint, possibly more in battle

Clothing: thick wolves fur color on a metal studded, double layered shawl of leather that is actually one piece, in back, with the gold rimmed girdle with leather belts. He wears heavy arm gaurds of steel and gold (or copper or brass, I never did make up my mind) and heavy ass greaves.

Weapons: two battle cleavers, viking berserker rage

Abilties: He can angst pretty well, he talks to his dead wife from time to time, I don't really think those are "abilities" per say.

History:
Asgir a Northlander, a warrior with praise and honor to his name. His name means "Spear of the Gods" and in combat he was their champion. An unstoppable, unrivaled combatant: brutal, fearless, arrogant. With his effortless victories his pride grew to rival his kills. In the end it was his undoing. His arrogance allowed him to be decieved and to be broken. His lover was captured and murdered before him, bringing him to his knees and failing his fellow soldiers. His armies were massacred, himself a disgrace. But his dishonor and personal failings would not be the end of his punishment. His lover's ghost, both loving guide and tortorous wraith, haunts him. He sees her at all times, he cannot escape the memories she brings nor choose when to reflect upon them. She also guides him to some unseen salvation or perhaps his death.

Asgir has officially placed as a runner-up in Neolucky's Kill the King Contest! W00T!!!!! Ironically, he seems the least popular of my entires...

It's too old for me to care, man. If it's in my scraps, there's very little chance of me revisiting it. I might redo it entirely, though.

*coughcolourcough* Hrrmm? What?? Just coughing... really.
I'm a big fan of all things nordic too. Battle axes... war hamemrs... Mmmm.. whoa, I just drooled a little bit. I love this guy's armour/clothery. Very buckly, belted and chaintastic. His face is nice too... he carries a very concerned expression, with a lot of sadness behind it. Cool idears.

Heh heh, My first reaction was to make them all fancy like, but then I realized he didn't need fancy swords. Just glorified meat cleavers. :evillaugh:

i do think his calves may be a bit short proportionately, judging from where I think the knees begin. Otherwise his shoe's tongue hits midcalf. This is not necessarily a bad thing. The world needs a few more short heroes.

I do wish you'd either colored it or gone more sensitive on the inking. The deadline is flattening, and this guy needs some volume to do him justice.

If he's going to be Nordic, they went a bit more nuts with their facial woad, so I'd go for more than just those two little chevrons on his cheekbones.

Lastly, what is the thingy on his forward upper arm? A garter?

Very cool, I like all the little details like the face-paint and chains & buckles and whatnot. The legs seem a little short though... or is that intentional?

If anything it's that his head is actually too small, but I think that accentuates his physical size. His legs are in fine proportion from what I can measure. Those are some big ass greaves too, they cut off his ankles which probably throws off the sense of proportion. I wanted him to feel very planted, firm into the ground. Unmovable. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of artists draw legs too long, as well. Like, in my Zarastra Deimos picture, her legs are proportionally too long. Which bummed me out because I wanted her actual physical height to be rather short. But oh well.

Actually, this line of thought is why I do a full figure drawing first. It gives me a finished picture to gauge proportion, perspective, and all that nonsense before I get lost in the details. However, if there's one motto by which to make art it is this: It doesn't matter if it is right, only that is looks right. Even perfect proportions can look wrong on the paper. As is demonstrated here, not that I have perfect proportion, but that even though my measurements panned out proper, there is still an optical effect that says otherwise.

I thought it probably was the greaves that were throwing me off. Good explanation though, it's obvious you know what you're doing. The reason I (and many others I assume) draw legs so long is the comic book influence. Comic book heroes are supposed to be like 8 heads tall right? But instead of proportionally increasing all the aspects of the anatomy to get that extra height, I think it makes the character look more imposing or attractive to lengthen the limbs while keeping the core body structures approximately proportional to the head.

Of course, I SAY that's what I do, when really I just bust out a stick figure with an oval head and circles for the elbows and draw legs until I run out of room on the paper...

When (IF) I get better, we should totally do a collab. My ninja chick vs. that huge ass dude you just drew. Hahaha, just don't keep getting better, give me a chance to catch up.

I'm kind of stagnant right now. I practice this stuff when I'm not making movies and vice versa. I hope to be hitting the celluloid again here soon. That should give you ample time! :D

Ha, I appreciate the encouragement, but I've given up drawing. I've already wasted half a sketch-book with nothing to show but a huge bag full of wadded up little paper balls. Maybe I'm just being dramatic. You make movies??? Like... HOW? Or I mean, like what do you make? I would LOVE to make a movie. I make little movies in my head while I'm trying to fall asleep. Do you have a webpage for your stuff?? *explodes*

Ha ha, this is my webpage! I'm a film major at Savannah College of Art and Design. I do independent stuff in my spare time and for class. There's screen caps from one of my first films (a throw away video piece that has developed something of a small fan following o_O) in my gallery.

Don't give up on drawing! I've drawn so much crap in my life it's not even funny! You just gotta keep going. You'll find your way.
