It was a relief to be herself again, as short-lived as that relief was. How stupid of her to forget who she was, to forget her self, her home, her beloved Bruise. Ridiculous. The next time she received some stupid invitation to join some stupid committee to research some stupid ruined city she was going to say NO. This had been far more trouble than it was worth, and now the entire place was falling apart. Or splitting apart, maybe. There wasn’t enough time to properly analyze exactly what was happening, her fur stood on end as the looming sense of danger invaded all of her senses.

She watched the others all running about, from her team and from other teams, sheer panic in the air. Grim reacted, rushing forward to offer aid. Pulling trapped strangers from rubble and debris, guiding panicked Stygians and Treats towards the train station. Some of them called her a hero, but they were sorely mistaken. Grim was no hero, she was in fact rather selfish. Everyone she helped came with a feeling of disappointment when she saw that they were not Bruise.

That’s all she really wanted. To ensure that both she and Bruise made it out of this hellish city alright. The number of fleeing people was thinning, most having already made it out, the last few scrambling out of the way of falling bits of walls and beams made of infuriating gingerbread or similar. Scanning the area she didn’t see the chunk of debris aiming directly for her, and still didn’t see it when a familiar voice called her name, instead whipping around towards the source of the voice and finding herself being tackled out of the way as it crumbled to the ground.

“Whoa! Thanks love.”

Grim couldn’t help the grin that snuck onto her face despite the catastrophe going on around them, both scrambling to their feet and racing towards the now departing train.

“Good thing I’m always around to get you out of trouble!”

Bruise was trying to sound grumpy, but it wasn’t really working, and Grim only cackled loudly as they ran closer to the train.

Only a few more strides away Grim leapt up onto Bruise’s back, two more steps from her much longer legs, before Bruise also jumped into the air, landing in the crowded carriage of the train. They both turned to watch the unfolding spectacle they were leaving behind, the same as nearly everyone else around them. That had been a very close call, but Grim recovered quicker than most, and from her perch on her girlfriend’s back she shoved her face into the fur of Bruise’s shoulders to stifle a giggle, all the previous fear washing away now that the two of them were safe, and leaving.
