Top layer markings will always appear on top of all other markings. When more than one top layer marking is present, they form one solid layer. This means that they won't blend into each other or tint each other. What they can do is create breaks in each others' patterns. Here is the list of markings required to be on the top layer:
Appaloosa:iconChronocompass:This creates a solid white marking, normally situated over the rump, that has medium-sized holes erased into it. The edges may be textured, as long as the main marking is opaque and has solid holes. The holes allow other markings to show through. It will cover less than 75% of the dragon. It does not have to be a contiguous shape. The entirety of the marking should have holes. It is a Top Layer Marking. Charged Appaloosa Charged Appaloosa may have large areas of white along with large holes. This creates an effect similar to the Piebald gene of dogs. There should still be at least a few holes in the marking. Live Examples: Sparks:iconChronocompass:Creates random, jagged lines across your dragon. Lines do not need to follow a pattern, but they should be one continuous marking rather than stripes. They may end in sharp tips. The edges must be hard and textured (as if a caterpillar munched on the edges). This is a Top Layer Marking. The lines must be relatively thin--the crest region of this example shows the widest it can be. They should not look like stripes. They follow regular marking color rules. Charged Sparks Charged Sparks may have a gradient between two colors. The gradient may affect the tips, the back, or create a stripe, as long as the transition is smo... TobianoTobiano is a white Top Layer Marking . Mutations such as shimmer or iridescence will still show on top, though these are only light reflection effects and do not actually color the dragon. You can cover up to 75% of your dragon with white. The edges must be random and solid. A small halo effect is allowed on some parts of the marking. For reasons of making cool designs, you're allowed to make minimal holes in tobiano that align with markings. In the example below, the ends of antennae have holes in the tobiano, even though this is not random. Charged Tobiano Charged Tobiano may ignore layering rules. It can sit at the bottom of your mar... Orca:iconChronocompass:Orca is a simple marking that adds a white patch to the lower spine of your dragon (always close to the hindlimbs or where hindlimbs would be). It may also be any color within elemental rules. It can take on some pretty weird shapes along with some plain ones--look at real orca markings for some ideas! There is a limit of one swirl if you choose to add one. The edge will appear soft, but not fully blended. This marking is a Top Layer Marking and will always sit on top of other markings. Charged Orca Charged Orca may have any number of swirls.Live Examples: Marked:iconChronocompass:Marked creates one solid patch of color that may be any hue. It should cover, at max, half of a wing (or one fifth of the body on wingless dragons). Its shape will be any natural marking. This can be a uniquely colored mask, a dot on the forehead, a single stripe, or a very small underbelly marking. It will never resemble an artificial or geometric shape. If there are stray patches, they must be minimal and clearly associated with the marking. You can't create multiple stripes or spots with this marking. It is a Top Layer Marking. Example (Marked is Teal and resembling the natural Tobiano/Overo marking of horses): Cha... Vampire:iconChronocompass:Creates splotches on your dragon that look similar to blankets of blood. Inspired by the bloodmark gene in horses. It is a Top Layer marking. The marking should have a clear edge. It may be textured or smooth. It should be the color of a chestnut horse (brown to red). If you are having trouble picking a color, you may use the slider below: Charged Vampire Charged Vampire may cover the entire dragon. Live Examples Zebra:iconChronocompass:Zebra is a white marking that covers between 25%-100% of your dragon, where stripes are 'erased' to allow the base to show through. You should also erase the snout to allow the base scales to show through. The tail should have an erased stripe along the top that goes along the bone. You may add a slightly transparent border around the marking--it should still be white, just at a lower opacity. When in doubt, reference a real zebra! THIS MARKING MAY ONLY BE WHITE. Dark red = minimum coverage (50% percentage anywhere)Light orange = maximum coverage (entire body) Texture Rules It should have a solid edge. You may have the ... Hailstorm:iconChronocompass:A marking inspired by real-world vitiligo. It creates small white dots that can also gather in one place. If it clumps together, it should be textured so that it's immediately recognizable as a collection of smaller white spots. It is a Top Layer Marking. Charged Hailstorm May be large white spots. Live Examples

Full-body markings cover even top-layer markings. When present together, they may overwrite one another, blend together, or create a hard edge between the two designs. Note: These markings may still show natural mutations that occur in your chosen animal (such as Tobiano) even if that gene is not present on the dragon.

Some markings can be top layer or appear beneath other markings. Below you can find markings that can 'block out' other top layer markings or go anywhere like a normal marking:

Dust:iconChronocompass:Creates random patches of black or very dark base coat/marking colors on your dragon. They should be solid, random patches. It should never have a full gradient edge. You may layer this as you please, or you may use it like a Top Layer Marking. This is inspired by interstellar dust. Charged Dust May have a solid, soft, blended, or textured edge.Live Examples Stitched:iconChronocompass:Creates large lines with stitched patterns on top of it. You may choose to use unconventional stitches (cross stitches, zigzag, blanket, tack, back stitch, etc.), as long as it clearly has the appearance of something sewn together. You may layer this as you please, or you may use it like a Top Layer Marking. Charged Stitched The 'stitches' may be a different color than the lines they are 'sewing.' Live Examples Nebula:iconChronocompass:Creates a large marking with a solid, soft, or textured edge. The inside may have two colors--in any pattern--with soft blending. These can be any colors except black or white. You may add dots within of the corresponding colors, but these dots should not be white, shimmer, or resemble stars. It may cover 75% of the dragon. You may layer this as you please, or you may use it like a Top Layer Marking Charged Nebula Charged nebula can cover the whole body. It may have any number of colors. It may have sharp shapes on the inside, as long as it resembles an actual nebula. Flaunt:iconChronocompass:Flaunt is an Ultra-rare Light marking that creates a gradient on your dragon in any elemental color. It may be in any shape or shapes, as long as the edge is a soft gradient and contains the same color(s). You may use it as a top-layer marking or use it beneath all markings. In the example, Flaunt creates a solid white gradient on the front of this dragon. Markings on top of it also change color according to elemental rules, so a red marking may change to a green marking if it goes into the flaunt range. Charged Flaunt Charged Flaunt allows you to change the position of markings along with their color. This creates the... Somatic:iconchronocompass:Somatic creates a patch that covers about half of the dragon. It may be one solid patch, or it can be interspersed like a merle or patchy pattern. This patch lays on the bottom of all markings. It can be any color within elemental rules. Markings on top of it also change color according to elemental rules. It must have a hard edge. Color Rules It must follow elemental color rules. Display traits on top will change color where they touch. The display traits must stay within elemental rules unless they are affected by a modifier that affects color. Modifier & Physical Trait Interactions This will affect the color of all mo... Grunge:iconChronocompass:Grunge is an Ultra-rare marking that adds splotches of corrosion and scratches on any areas of your dragon's body. It may be partial or the entirety of the body and can be any shape (as long as shapes are clearly part of the same marking). It should have some sort of texture to it. It may contain up to two of the following colors: gold, silver, black, white, pink, yellow, red, orange. It may be in any layer order desired. Charged Grunge Charged Grunge may use any two colors, even if they are not listed above or in the elemental color scheme. Veil:iconchronocompass:Veil is a marking that covers the whole body; You can erase soft holes into it, but it should generally stick to creases or folds/accent musculature if possible. It can be any color. It will always have soft edges. Veil may be layered in any order. Charged Veil Charged Veil may use a gradient between any two colors. Fawn Spots:iconChronocompass:Fawn spots are a line of spots that are either white or in the elemental color scheme. They must be clearly connected in a line-like pattern. You must have at least one row of spots. You can choose for them to be vertical, horizontal, or spiraled--as long as the line of spots looks like a line. You may layer them normally or as a top-layer marking. Charged Fawn Spots Charged Fawn Spots may be any color, even if it's outside of the elemental color scheme. Live Examples:

There is also one marking which removes the effect of scales. It will cancel out all scale coloration. Hailstorm and Starry may still show on top as a lighter patch of pollen/discolored patch of skin.

There is one marking that covers an enlarged scale. This can appear above anything.
