Why is it every time I give up on this place I still come back?

Long story short, this is the start of a reboot of sorts for this account. Anything unnecessary will be eliminated in the coming weeks and my focus going forward will be on forging and finetuning my own artstyle and working on my presentation. That means killing a lot of old journals and old crufty art, followed by lots of shitty, oftentimes uncolored, art that will hopefully grow gradually better with time. My projects are currently on hold until I feel I have the skill needed to do them justice and enough planning done to see them through to fruition.

In the meantime, please bear with me during this transition period and note that if you followed me for stuff like the Folder Icons or just don't want to get spammed with practice art, I won't hold an Unwatch against you.

I'm dog tired of DeviantART...

I just tried to post a journal entry and not only is the Mood feature gone now but the damn editor barfed all over me in like 5 different ways before eating my message and telling me I had an "invalid symbol" in the journal title. Given it was alphanumeric with quotation marks, an exclamation mark and some spaces, I don't get what could possibly be so "invalid".

Q. How long have you been on DeviantArt?
A. 3 years, according to my profile. To be honest, I've personally lost track.

What does your username mean?

A. "Starwing" is the atelier I work with. It was originally a group of friends, but now it's just down to two of us, my collaborator Kris Bright and myself. "Corona" is me, Corona MacGuinness. It's a name whose origins refer to a ring of light, similar to the ray of hope and flash of inspiration I try to personify with my work.

Describe yourself in three words.

A. "Needs. More. Words."

Are you left or right handed?

A. Technically right-handed but I've been trying to teach myself ambidexterity for years with moderate success.

What was your first deviation?

A. I don't even remember. I think it was something I deleted in a fit of shame. My earliest Deviation on record, though, is a folder icon of Doctor Whooves from My Little Pony, which is admittedly probably more shameful than whatever originally occupied that spot but I've since realized shame is a seriously overrated concept and try to avoid it as much as I can.

What is your favourite type of art to create?

A. Definitely digital vector art, in particular logos and character designs using templates I make myself... sadly, most of those are development-related, so I can't post many of them here until the projects they belong to are far enough along that it wouldn’t actively spoil anything.

If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?
A. Probably digital painting in the vein of Sakimichan or Genzoman. As long and as hard as I’ve tried to hone my current style, it has a lot of limits I don’t think I can really break through and isn't really all that impressive when all’s said and done. This is mostly down to the fact I can’t wrap my head around the concept of shading, which tends to discourage me from trying to create any “real” art and often gets me down when people say my work comes off as “flat”.

What was your first favourite?

A. “deviation in storage” by captainosaka… if memory serves, it used to be some kind of art related to his Gurren Lagann fancomic Double K.

What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?

A. Typically something that spawned a major reaction from me the first time I saw it or was just very well-executed. I also tend to gravitate towards abstract art… stuff by my buddy Bluxxon definitely falls in that category.

Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?
A. Wow, that’s a tough one… I’d probably have to say it’s kevinbolk, whose comics and comedy pieces are always good for a laugh.
Admittedly, there are others who could make the running, but I didn't pick them because they're better-known for work in other circles.

If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?

A. I’d go on a date with K-A-N-A! Nah, just kidding… to be honest, the question’s never really occurred to me. I guess if I really had to pick I’d say just spending a day palling around with one of my online friends who’s also a Deviant would be enough for me.

How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?

A. My personal life? Not really. My creative life? Immensely! There isn’t a single piece of art that doesn’t go on to inspire me in some form, be it cultivating an existing idea, planting the seeds of a new one or simply telling me I should probably try something else because some aspect of my current works seems to similar to something that’s already been done. Even pieces I don’t like show me something that might be able to be done better or simply show me that there are things I’m not interested in and help me narrow down that concept next time I try to make something.

What are your preferred tools to create art?

A. In the rare event I do paper art, a No. 2 Ticonderoga HB pencil with a fresh eraser and some printer paper usually gets the job done. For digital art, I use Paint.NET with the following plugins:
  • 1px Expansion
  • AA’s Assistant
  • Alpha Mask
  • Black and Alpha+
  • Bulk Processing
  • Channel Shift
  • Flip/Rotate Layer
  • Trail
  • PSD Support
  • ICO Support

For anything that requires more complex filters or dynamic text I use a severely outdated version of Adobe Photoshop I picked up at the Goodwill a couple years back. It may not be the most cutting-edge tech, but it gets the job done well enough for me. Surprisingly, I prefer a mouse to a tablet. I tried using a WACOM tablet once under the mistaken impression it would allow more precision of motion, but it ended in disaster.  If I can ever get a touchscreen-tablet-type device, I might reconsider, though.

What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?

A. My bedroom. It’s technically the only place I can, since it’s where my PC is. I’ve tried using my laptop for art, but… it seldom turns out well due to what a pain the thing is to use.

What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?

A. The changing of the DeviantART logo. In a twisted way, the common rage for the new logo really brought people together and bred a form of comradery that was surprisingly in-line with what DA claimed they were going for. By trying to put everyone under one, frankly hideous, banner, they succeeded in encouraging everyone to become more wild and radical in their opinions and actions. Whether they were for or against the change, it really made the Deviants each stand back and realize just what DeviantART was in their eyes.

Okay... would someone care to explain to me just what these "status update" things are and what they have to do with uploading my art? I get DeviantART is trying to incorporate modern social hub elements into their layout, but this is increasingly looking like it isn't just taking layout inspiration but flat out trying to copy Facebook's primary function.

I pray I'm wrong, but if I'm not then please... dA, don't do what Google did to YouTube. We use your site for expressing ourselves artistically, not for social networking.
