On the Ice: LeftHandOfDarkness

Genly Ai and Therem Harth rem ir Estraven on their epic trek across the polar ice cape of the planet Gethen, aka Winter.

How does one paint White Weather?? That condition were the light is so intense and so diffuse, being reflected from sky and ice in all directions, that you can't see anything because there are no shadows to outline the shapes of your surroundings?

Just finished reading LHOD for the first time and was completely blown away by it. I love how you've captured the sense of "unshadow."

Thank you! Yes I think it is a great book - one of the best novels of the 20th century IMHO. :)

This is amazing. It captures the feeling of vast openness, the insignificance of two small figures against the ice, in a very beautiful way.

I love this. This is the exact sort of thing I've always found hard to capture, yet it really sums up the book well! Its beautiful but desolate, and from the distance you can truly see how tiny and insignifigant the travelers are.
