Adeline The Phantom Engine

Here she is.

I give you Adeline the Phantom Engine!. Possibly the most interesting and sympathetic original character ever made, with a backstory full of mystery and drama that changed the Skarloey Railway forever.

It all starts in 1967. At the back of the slate quarry lies a gate; accessing a private section of the line belonging to the Ministry Of Defence. No one knew what they used it for but munitions would be delivered to it daily for classified reasons, and the engine brought by the Thin Controller to run it was named Adeline. New over from an army depot in England she had the right clearance to work at the M.O.D quarry, and as an Oil Burner the army was keen for an engine of a non-spark hazard. With Adeline on the railway the Skarloey engines are free to carry out their regular passenger and goods work. However delays in work for the army become suspicions of sabotage... a threat is looming of those wanting to see the M.O.D and her majesty's government in ruin, and so a plan is conceived to resolve the conflict. Soon though, on the day of August 22nd 1968, an ordeal begins that the Skarloey Railway will never forget. One evening at the quarry, sudden ticking is heard near the munitions trucks.... IT S A BOMB! Without hesitation Adeline buffers up; she must get the trucks far away before everything is blown to kingdom come!. Bidding farewell to her driver, Adeline is thrown into reverse and becomes a runaway nuke on wheels; ready to sacrifice herself for save hundreds of lives. As she rolls onto the old iron bridge….. KA-BOOM!!!!

Adeline is gone.

Many years later in 2012, an interesting topic about the engine's numbers is brought up. Sparking interest between Atlas & Ivo Hugh, the tragic story of what occurred back in 1968 is told, and thus the quest begins to re-discover what really happened to Adeline. After many days of spooks, debates and puzzles, the engines inch ever closer to the truth, but don't have to continue their mission for long. Thanks to Duncan attempting to face his fears of the Old Iron Bridge, the unimaginable happens....

Adeline was alive!

Having survived the explosion and fall into the ravine; Adeline is rescued and brought home, but i'm sorry to say not in the way she left it. Having been submerged in the marsh for over 43 years, Adeline is not the pretty sight she used to be, and thanks to years of exposure to swamp water, her eye sight has seen better days. Unfortunately she’s also suffered a case of Amnesia and P.T.S.D from the accident, so trying to remember her past proves a new dead end for the others.

Having been fully restored to working order, Adeline now sports a brand new shape of a proud Steamer instead of an Oil Burner, as well as a pair of Blue Glasses to improve her decayed vision. But all these upgrades don’t help her feel whole again as she begins to doubt herself ever being really useful again. Regardless; she must now adjust to her new life as a modern engine on the Skarloey Railway. But with the help of friends old and new, Adeline overcomes her fears and re-discovers who she is; accepting her new purpose. The final piece of the puzzle is found and the mystery of Adeline is solved. But all the same, while this incredible journey still may be a lot for Adeline to take in, who knows what more of her past she may have lost... only time will tell. Having risen from the dead, this little engine isn't such a phantom no more.
