Would you believe I got study credit from journalism school for drawing this! Well, sure, it accompanied an article I wrote... But anyway!

This picture was drawn for the first part of my series of articles about Finnish musical theatre. If you're interested, I just published it in English in my blog. It'll introduce you to Finns' all-time favourite musicals – some of which are also featured in the drawing, of course.

The man in the middle is the hero from the most popular Finnish musical ever, Tukkijoella. The others, clockwise from left, are Sally Bowles from Cabaret, Maria from The Sound of Music, Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof, and Eliza from My Fair Lady.

This is awesome. I've heard of (and even seen, in a couple of cases) most of these, except the one in the middle. What's Tukkijoella about? Seeing a log-driver, though, makes me think of something else musical... youtu.be/upsZZ2s3xv8 (the Log Driver's Waltz)

Thanks!

Hehe! It's actually something like that, yes. A group of log-drivers visits a village and causes trouble, all the girls fall in love with them, the heroine's father is against the marriage, but in the end the true love wins. A bit of romantic fun, I suppose – I've never seen it live myself.

I didn't know Sound of Music was Finnish! I thought it was set in Austria...

Sorry if I've been unclear here! I didn't mean to say there have been versions of SoM where the story is set in Finland – as far as I know, it's always set in Austria, in all the Finnish productions and everywhere else. I just meant to point out that it's one of Finns' favourite musicals, almost every theatre in this country has produced it at some point!

Oh, no, I knew it was set in Austria, I just thought it originated in Austria. I thought you were saying that it originated in Finland.

Ah, I see – in any case, sorry if I was unclear. It's a true Austrian meets Broadway combo Finns just happen to love!

Oh, okay, that makes sense. :)
