The FBI office in New York is puzzled by the encrypted signature flash drive that is locked and needs help to unlock the key information that will solve a 15-year-old cold case. In downtown Lower Manhattan, New York is one of the modern skyscrapers that houses Manhattan's FBI office. It is where we find nineteen-year-old Nancy Drew and her associates getting briefed about a 15-year-old unsolved murder.

Chapter 1: The Labyrinth in the Pen

The twentieth floor of the FBI’s Manhattan Field Office offered a panoramic, floor-to-ceiling view of the Brooklyn Bridge, its steel cables draped like silver spiderwebs over the grey waters of the East River. Inside the sleek, glass-walled briefing room, however, the view was entirely ignored.

Nineteen-year-old Nancy Drew stood at the head of a long mahogany conference table, her dark chocolate red hair catching the sharp fluorescence of the overhead lights. Her brown eyes were fixed on a small, high-resolution image projected onto the smart-board behind her.

"Fifteen years," Nancy said, her voice carrying a calm authority that commanded the room. "For fifteen years, the murder of investigative reporter Juliandra Valler has sat on a shelf. She was hours away from publishing an expose that would have dismantled a multi-billion-dollar racketeering empire. Instead, she was found dead in her office. The only clue left behind was this."

Nancy clicked a remote. The slide changed to show a sleek, metallic cylinder.

"A custom titanium flash drive," explained Krystal Palmer, leaning forward. Krystal, the team’s forensic investigator, ran a hand through her neat black hair. Her brown eyes shone with the excitement of a scientist who had finally cracked a stubborn puzzle. "It was hidden inside a hollowed-out executive desk pen recovered from Valler's personal effects. The FBI’s tech division couldn’t bypass the hardware-level encryption without triggering a self-destruct sequence. But when they handed it over to us yesterday, we looked closer at the physical shell."

Krystal tapped her tablet, zooming in on the casing of the drive. "You see those tiny, microscopic ridges? It’s an interlocking labyrinth pattern. It’s not just decorative; it’s a tactile signature. We ran the design through our database, and it matches the logo of Montgomery Galleries—owned by Charles Montgomery."

"The billionaire philanthropist and art mogul," added Special Agent in Charge Margo Croft, who was leaning against the back wall next to her colleague, Agent Willow Towes. Croft, a seasoned veteran with a sharp gaze, nodded approvingly at the teenagers gathered around the table. "We’ve suspected Montgomery of operating a global laundering front for a decade, but he’s insulated. Without Valler’s original files, we have nothing to connect him to her death or the racketeering."

"Which is where we come in," Nancy said, smiling. She turned to George Funane, who sat next to her, tapping away on a ruggedized dual-screen laptop.

George, Nancy’s digital investigator, adjusted her shoulder-length black hair, the deep blue streak in her fringe catching the light. "The flash drive uses a dual-key cryptographic lock," George explained. "One key is on the drive itself. The second key is a dead-lady’s switch, designed by Valler to automatically upload her audio files and evidence to a secure server if she didn't check in. But Montgomery intercepted her before she could activate it, leaving the switch dormant and half-locked. To bypass it without losing the data, we need the local server protocols from Montgomery’s private gallery vault in SoHo."

"And timing is everything," noted Thea Panagopoulos, the team’s financial investigator. Thea, whose raven black hair was pulled into a professional low bun, tapped a finger on a stack of financial printouts. "A few hours ago, I detected a series of massive, anomalous transfers originating from dormant trust accounts in the Cayman Islands. They perfectly match the ledger formats found in Valler’s early notes. Montgomery is liquidating his assets. He knows the FBI is sniffing around again, and he’s preparing to run."

"Then we strike tonight," Nancy decided, looking around the room at her team. "We have one shot to get into the SoHo gallery, bypass the vault security, grab the physical records to match the digital ledger, and decrypt that flash drive."

Bess Matsuda, George’s cousin and the team’s social investigator, smoothed down the lapels of her chic designer blazer. Her long black hair fell perfectly over her shoulders. "A high-society charity gala is happening at the Montgomery Gallery tonight," Bess said, her brown eyes sparkling with mischief. "The guest list is exclusive, the security is impenetrable, and the champagne is imported. In other words: it’s the perfect playground."

Nancy grinned. "Let’s get to work."

Chapter 2: Eyes in the Sky, Boots on the Ground

By 8:00 PM, a cool, crisp autumn breeze was sweeping through the historic, cobblestone streets of SoHo. Cast-iron loft buildings stood illuminated by warm streetlamps, their wide windows revealing high-ceilinged art galleries and trendy boutiques.

Parked two blocks away from the Montgomery Gallery in an unmarked, black utility van, Nancy Drew and George Funane sat in front of a wall of glowing monitors.

"Comm-check, everyone," Nancy said into her subtle, skin-toned earpiece. "How are we looking out there?"

"Position established," came the voice of Lia Winslow. On Nancy’s screen, a high-definition thermal feed flickered to life. Lia, the blond-haired Swiss-American surveillance investigator, was perched on the roof of an upscale boutique directly across from the gallery. Beside her, Stephanie Yi, her dark brown eyes focused on a high-powered optical lens, was adjusting a tripod.

"We’ve got complete optical and infrared coverage of the gallery entrance and Montgomery’s private penthouse elevator on the north side," Stephanie reported, her voice low and steady. "Security is heavy. Four guards at the front, two patrolling the private alleyway."

"Don't worry about the guards in the alley," Chrissy Chan’s cheerful voice chimed in. Chrissy, the team’s remote and aerial investigator, was sitting on the fire escape of a brick building overlooking the gallery’s roof. Her long black hair was tied back in a quick ponytail, and her fingers danced across a tablet controller. "My micro-drones are in the air. They’re running ultra-quiet brushless motors—completely invisible to the naked eye."

On George’s screen, a 3D wireframe map of the Montgomery Gallery began to render in real-time.

"Look at that," Chrissy murmured proudly. "Mapping the roof access points, the laser security grid lines, and... bingo. There’s a three-second blind spot in the infrared sweep on the second-floor balcony. I’ve uploaded the path to Zee and Marcy."

Inside the glittering, crowded main hall of the gallery, Elizabeth "Zee" Franklin and Marcy Tamish walked arm-in-arm past a towering abstract sculpture. Both girls looked stunning. Zee, her African American heritage complemented by a sleek, sapphire-blue silk gown, held a glass of sparkling water, her dark brown eyes scanning the room with effortless poise. Marcy, with her dark auburn hair styled in elegant waves and her striking blue eyes highlighted by minimal makeup, wore an emerald-green dress that screamed old-school Manhattan wealth.

"Copy that, Chrissy," Zee whispered into her hidden collar-mic, offering an elegant nod to a passing socialite. "We’re in. The crowd is a mix of high-profile art patrons, politicians, and people who look like they’ve never eaten a carbohydrate in their lives. Marcy and I are moving toward the VIP lounge."

"Keep an eye out for the target," Nancy instructed from the van. "Our financial tracker shows Montgomery is still on-site, but he won't stay long if those assets finish transferring."

"Speaking of targets," Marcy muttered softly, her Irish-American charm masking the sharp focus of her gaze. "I see his executive secretary, Evelyn Vance. She’s hovering near the restricted hallway access door, holding a secure tablet."

"Bess, you're up," Nancy said.

"On it," Bess replied.

Bess Matsuda emerged from the crowd like a breath of fresh air. Wearing a shimmering gold dress, she glided toward the VIP bar where Evelyn Vance had just stepped to grab a sparkling water. Bess didn't just walk into a room; she commanded it with an aura of warmth and approachability.

"Oh, my goodness, I am so sorry," Bess said, intentionally bumping lightly into Evelyn, causing a few drops of water to splash onto the bar. "I am completely clumsy today! Let me get that."

Evelyn, a stern-looking woman with tight glasses, looked annoyed, but Bess’s bright, disarming smile immediately softened her.

"It's quite alright," Evelyn said, dabbing her dress with a napkin.

"No, really, I insist," Bess said, her voice dripping with genuine empathy. "This event is just so beautiful, but honestly, it’s a bit overwhelming, isn’t it? I’m Bess, by the way. I’m here with my uncle—he’s looking to acquire some of the late-period impressionist pieces, but the crowd is just... wow."

Within two minutes, Bess had Evelyn laughing, completely lowering her guard.

"Oh, the VIP vault viewing is actually much quieter," Evelyn said, leaning in confidentially, charmed by Bess’s sweet demeanor. "But we only open the vault on a very strict timetable to protect the high-value assets. In fact, the next security cycle is in exactly seven minutes."

"Seven minutes," Bess repeated warmly, catching Marcy’s eye across the room. "That sounds incredibly exclusive. I’d love to know how one even gets on the list for that..."

In the van, George’s fingers flew across her keyboard. "I got it! Bess just fed me the audio confirmation of the timing. The vault's digital security grid enters its diagnostic cycle in six minutes and thirty seconds. That gives us a three-minute window where the physical secondary locking mechanism is bypassed."

"Zee, Marcy, you're on," Nancy commanded. "Get to the vault door. George and I are ready to feed you the bypass codes."

Chapter 3: The Vault and the Switch

Zee and Marcy slipped away from the main floor, navigating past a heavy velvet rope marked Private Collection.

"Guards are turning the corner on the south corridor," Stephanie’s voice warned from the rooftop. "You have twelve seconds to clear the hallway."

Zee didn't hesitate. She grabbed Marcy’s arm, pulling her into a recessed alcove displaying a Renaissance-style tapestry. They stood close, pretending to be deep in an academic debate about the weave of the fabric. The two security guards walked past, their heavy boots clicking on the polished concrete, completely ignoring the two young women.

"Clear," Lia confirmed from her vantage point.

Zee and Marcy sprinted down the rest of the corridor, reaching a heavy, brushed-steel door with a digital keypad and an engraved labyrinth logo.

"We’re at the vault," Marcy whispered, pulling a compact electronic bypass device from her evening clutch. She plugged it into the maintenance port under the keypad. "George, do your magic."

"Initiating the handoff," George said, her face illuminated by the blue light of her monitors. "Thea, I need you to flood the gallery’s local server with micro-transactions to distract their IT department."

"Already on it," Thea replied from her remote station in the FBI building. "I’m routing fifty thousand micro-bids on their online auction portal. Their servers are lagging by four hundred percent. The vault’s local security is failing-safe. Now, George!"

George hit a final sequence on her laptop. The keypad on the vault door flashed green. With a heavy, satisfying clunk, the electromagnetic seals released.

Zee and Marcy pushed the heavy door open and slipped into the vault. It was a temperature-controlled room filled with high-value paintings, sculpture crates, and—most importantly—a sleek digital terminal in the corner.

"We have exactly two minutes," Marcy said, pulling out a high-speed data-cloner. She plugged it directly into the terminal’s main terminal. "Cloning physical records and offshore serial numbers now."

"George," Nancy said, leaning over her cousin's shoulder. "Can you access the digital audio log from here?"

"Yes, the local server is bridging to our network," George said, her eyes wide. "Wait... it’s decrypting. The dual-key is completing. The files are opening!"

A waveform pattern appeared on George's screen, and a voice, crackling with fifteen years of digital dust, began to play through Nancy’s earpiece. It was the voice of Juliandra Valler.

"If you are hearing this, it means my worst fears have been realized. I have tracked the offshore accounts directly to Charles Montgomery’s private gallery. He is laundering federal funds through high-value art acquisitions... wait. Someone is at the door. Charles? How did you get in here—"

The audio log erupted into a violent scuffle, followed by a cold, unmistakable voice.

"You should have taken the buyout, Juliandra. No one is going to find this pen. And no one is going to save your story."

Nancy’s jaw clenched. "We have him. That’s Montgomery’s voice, clear as day, confessing to the murder. Krystal, can we run voice-print confirmation on this in real-time?"

From the FBI office, Krystal Palmer’s voice came back instantly. "I’m running it against Montgomery’s public speeches now... it’s a ninety-nine point nine percent biometric match. Nancy, this is the silver bullet. This is first-degree murder."

Suddenly, the red warning lights in the gallery vault began to flash. A loud hooter began to blare.

"Get out of there!" Stephanie yelled over the comms. "Montgomery’s personal security just received a silent alarm on their tablets. They’re converging on the vault!"

"Zee, Marcy, run!" Nancy ordered.

Zee grabbed the data-cloner, which had just finished copying the files. "We’re out!" she gasped as she and Marcy burst from the vault, dodging down a side utility exit just as three armed security guards rounded the corner.

"He’s running!" Lia shouted from her rooftop observation post. "I see Montgomery. He’s exiting the penthouse elevator on the north deck. He’s got two bodyguards, a briefcase, and he’s heading toward a black town car!"

"Chrissy, track him!" Nancy commanded, standing up and grabbing her jacket. "George, coordinated with SAC Croft’s tactical team. We’re moving!"

Chapter 4: The Pier Confrontation

Within minutes, the pursuit had moved away from the cobblestone streets of SoHo and toward the industrial docks of the East River.

"He’s heading for the private helipad at Pier 36!" Chrissy reported, her micro-drone tracking the black town car from three hundred feet in the air. "I’m projecting his ETA at ninety seconds. He’s got an executive chopper spinning up its rotors."

Nancy was behind the wheel of the agency's sleek SUV, weaving through the late-night Manhattan traffic with practiced precision. George sat in the passenger seat, her tablet displaying the real-time location of the FBI’s tactical units.

"Croft’s teams are coming from the north, but they’re caught in tunnel construction traffic!" George said, holding onto the dashboard as Nancy took a sharp turn onto the FDR Drive. "We’re the only ones close enough to cut him off!"

"We’ll make it," Nancy said, her expression determined. "Thea, tell me you’ve got those accounts frozen."

"I’m on the final protocol," Thea replied, her fingers flying across her terminal back at Federal Plaza. "I’ve flagged every single offshore account matching the serial numbers Zee just pulled. The moment Montgomery tries to authorize a transfer to clear his flight path out of US airspace, the funds will freeze."

At Pier 36, the wind whipped off the water, carrying the salty tang of the harbor. The loud, rhythmic thump-thump-thump of a helicopter's rotors chopped through the night air.

Charles Montgomery, a tall, silver-haired man in an immaculate tailored suit, ran toward the waiting aircraft, his leather briefcase clutched tightly in his hand. His head of security, a burly man with a earpiece, scanned the perimeter.

"Hurry, sir!" the guard yelled over the roar of the engine. "We have to clear out now!"

Just as Montgomery reached the steps of the helicopter, the night was suddenly split by the high-pitched wail of sirens.

Three black FBI SUVs roared onto the pier, their tires screeching as they drifted into a wide blockade, completely sealing off the entrance. The bright, white glare of high-powered floodlights illuminated the entire pier, casting long, dramatic shadows against the swirling river mist.

The SUV doors flung open. Nancy Drew stepped into the light, her dark chocolate red hair whipping in the rotor wash, alongside SAC Margo Croft and a full squad of armed Federal Agents.

"Charles Montgomery!" Agent Croft announced over a bullhorn, her voice cut through the roar of the helicopter. "This is the FBI! Step away from the aircraft with your hands up!"

Montgomery’s face paled, but he quickly masked his panic with a cold, arrogant sneer. He signaled his guards to stand their ground.

"You have nothing, Croft!" Montgomery laughed coldly, his voice dripping with condescension. "Valler died fifteen years ago, and her allegations died with her! You can't hold me on rumors and old news!"

Nancy took a step forward, her voice calm, unwavering, and carrying over the howling wind.

"Valler’s dead-lady’s switch was decrypted two hours ago," Nancy spoke up, her brown eyes locking onto Montgomery’s. "We recovered the complete digital audio log of you entering her office, along with the matching serial numbers for the offshore accounts pulled directly from your private vault in SoHo."

Montgomery’s arrogant smile faltered, replaced by a look of sheer terror. "That’s impossible..."

George stepped up beside Nancy, holding up a sleek tablet that displayed a glowing red screen with a massive flashing symbol: ASSETS FROZEN.

"Your accounts are locked, Mr. Montgomery," George said with a triumphant grin. "And your private pilot just received a federal grounding order. You aren't flying anywhere tonight."

For a long, tense moment, the only sound was the fading hum of the helicopter as the pilot cut the engines. Realizing his empire had utterly collapsed and his escape was dead in the water, Montgomery's head of security slowly lowered his weapon, raising his hands in surrender.

"Secure the suspect," Croft ordered.

FBI agents surged forward, the metallic click of handcuffs echoing over the pier as they secured Charles Montgomery. As he was led past Nancy, he glared at her with bitter resentment.

Nancy simply offered him a polite, confident smile. "For Juliandra," she whispered.

Epilogue: Justice Delayed, No Longer

Seventy-two hours later, the atmosphere inside the FBI Manhattan Field Office was electric. The press room was packed to capacity, with news crews from every major network setting up cameras and microphones.

Behind the podium stood Special Agent in Charge Margo Croft, flanked by Agent Willow Towes. Beside them stood Nancy Drew, George Funane, Bess Matsuda, Zee Franklin, Marcy Tamish, Lia Winslow, Thea Panagopoulos, Stephanie Yi, Krystal Palmer, and Chrissy Chan. The ten young women looked professional, proud, and undeniably formidable.

SAC Croft adjusted the microphone, looking out at the sea of reporters.

"Fifteen years ago, justice was delayed for Juliandra Valler and her family," SAC Croft announced to the flashing cameras. "For too long, her voice was silenced by a mastermind who believed his wealth and power placed him above the law. But today, that silence is over. Thanks to the extraordinary forensic genius, relentless tactical strategy, and flawless teamwork of the Drew Detective Agency, the cipher has been broken, the evidence secured, and Charles Montgomery has been formally charged with First-Degree Murder and Federal Racketeering."

The room erupted into a flurry of questions, cameras flashing rapidly as reporters clamored to get Nancy’s attention.

Nancy looked at her friends, sharing a quiet, proud smile with George and Bess. They had taken on a fifteen-year-old cold case, faced down one of the most powerful men in New York, and won.

"Another closed case, Nancy," George whispered, nudging her cousin.

"Case fifteen," Nancy agreed quietly, her eyes shining with warmth. "But definitely not our last."

I just wanted to clear something up since I know it can be difficult to tell who's genuine on here these days. I'm actually a professional artist, not a bot or scam account. I had an older DeviantArt account that I'd been using for many years for my artwork and commissions, but I eventually left that account because there were so many scammers and people pretending to be artists that it became really frustrating.
This is a newer account of mine, which is also why you won't find much of my artwork posted here. I've had some of my work stolen and reposted before, so nowadays I mainly share my art on Twitter and Instagram instead.
I completely understand being careful with new accounts, especially with how things are on DeviantArt now. I just wanted to be upfront about who I am. I came across your profile and really enjoyed your work, so I thought I'd reach out and say hello. And if anything about my previous message seemed strange or came across the wrong way, I apologize. That honestly wasn't my intention
I’m honestly just trying to talk to you and get to know you a little. But if you’re comfortable with that, just let me know.
