Waltzing Ariadne- Wasted and.. by stambo42 Waltzing Ariadne- Wasted and.. by stambo42
"Lush Life (Wasted and Wounded, Waltzing Ariadne)... (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)"

Is the full title of this piece... or some combination there of.

Maybe just "Waltzing Ariadne... (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)"

This took me close to four months... like most of the metal ones, a lot is getting lost in the photograph and reproduction.

It might be the most confessional thing I've ever made.

more images later, with different lighting.

Oil on Aluminum, 48"x36" 2010.

Wow.... the feedback blew up on this, and I had no idea! I was so absorbed in my latest piece that I totally missed this. Thanks for all the positive feedback! To answer questions: It's Dionysus, the greek precursor to Bacchus. Dionysus was less of a frat boy and more of a thespian. Ariadne was his wife... his mortal wife. There are different endings to their story, but in the one that interests me, he is unable to restore her to life or grant her a place with the gods. I felt that element made for a more interesting and complicated patron of alcohol. It's painted in oil on aluminum. Don't try acrylic, it peels right off. The thing in the top right corner is a lime peel, not an apple, though the red thing in the bottom left is an apple peel. As for the Squids- I'm not sure I have a concrete answer for that one. I have ideas, but I think I am best left saying it doesn't work without them.

The title is a reference to a Tom Waits song "Tom Trauberts blues" [link]

though there is also a bit of Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life" [link]

Daily Deviation, who'd of thunk it?

Thanks again!

I don't know what ideas you had in mind when you painted this, of course....But based on the title, and the fact that in Greco-Roman mythology, the Cretan princess Ariadne was destined to become the god Dionysus/Bacchus' wife, I can't help but think of that when I look at this picture. The ecstatic face of the man, and his horns, and the um...plentiful, hehe...booze certainly makes an excellent representation of Bacchus in my mind. I really like this!

Trying to find the symbols 9in this piece and apart from the ones representing luxury (expensive alcohol, seafood, silk and olives) I don't quite get what is that piece on the right with the apple peel? And the red thing on the left, sticking right above the table. Any hints? :)

In fact... this guy looks like the guy i fell hardcore in love with December 1st of last year. I wonder if he has horns now...

This is very whimsical. And I think that the serious expression on horn boys head is intriguing. I think that although this is intriguing and eye catching, the horns are the most curious part. Its not so much that he has horns, its just what they add to the imagery over all. Well done. Beautiful colors.

what are the dimensions to this oil piece, it feels like a larger canvas with all the details in it. Brilliant piece, the skin tones, gold and glass look great. Keep up the great work.
