For the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con coming June, 14th I was commissioned by the convention director to do this exclusive variant cover for a new book by Aspen Comics called "Bubble Gun".
When I first got the character reference for this cover I knew this girl was right up my alley in terms of the characters' persona, but I had no idea how much fun she would be to draw. My favorite part was drawing her left leg with that boot and the way she has a sock peaking out the top and in retrospect I kind of with I had drawn this pose face on. I still like it, but she has this really cool chest armor that could have been fun to dabble with. (no pun intended). There wasn't any backside reference available for the character at the time so I had to improvise what you see here on her back.
It's rare these days that I get a concept pitched to me, but still I like the refreshing challenge a predetermined concept offers. For this one they were looking for a homage of two J. Scott Campbell covers from Danger Girl and Wild C.A.T.S. I think the end result here is a nice mash-up of the two images presented to me while standing on it's own by not being an obvious swipe. In my opinion homage covers work best on a well established series or character where the homage can easily be taken as such. With a new series such as Bubble Gun here a homage, especially on the first issue, Can be missed, or worse, mistaken as a swipe or lack of creativity on the artists' end.
All in all, I'm mostly happy with how this turned out and I hope you all enjoy it as well.
