ceo life

Journal Entry: Thu Oct 21, 2010, 3:52 AM

personal entry. tldr;

shaddup. read it anyway. :P

it goes in waves. you know, either good or bad. i wouldn't say that life as ceo of a booming internet company is mostly good or mostly bad. it's high highs and low lows. the rest of it just doesn't seem to get remembered with all that's going on.

generally speaking, lately it's a wave of high highs. i don't really write journals about the low lows. i probably should.

being around a particularly well known hollywood figure i used to work for makes me physically ill. and while that sounds bad i don't really mean it that way. i just... get upset hearing his voice. it reminds me of harder days.  i'm not even sure if it has to do with him, it's just the culture of his failing company at the time and the suckage i recall from it and how badly i don't want to "go there" again. he was at a conference today i was invited to attend and i knew he'd be there, but i wasn't told he'd be a guest speaker. or i guess i didn't read the stuff my office handed to me as i headed over there. lots of really important people in tech were there, and i suppose it would have been good for me to stick around, make an appearance so to speak, but as soon as he started talking i just couldn't take it. for a lot of reasons. so i bailed. it felt liberating. deeply liberating.

i went to dinner with my buddy dee instead and we shot the shit about business ideas, life, girls, the usual stuff. then we went out to the party from the prior event and i bumped in to an old friend who was the creator of mp3.com back in the day. really great to catch up with him and give him the state of affairs with deviantART as we always do. i explained what we're up to, the new deviantART Stock Project, deviantART Muro and some of the planned activities around these and their significance. We caught up on his projects, they sounded awesome.. and i continued on to spend some time with one of deviantART's lawyers talking about some company matters that needed some thought.

across the room i spot Chad Wolf with his whole band, collectively they are called Carolina Liar. I dedicated a whole Journal Entry to Chad last year that you should read if you haven't already. so we hung out and i got to hear the whole story of how things continued after we abruptly stopped hanging out in about 2004 (due to a break up with an exexexgirlfriend i met him through) and how carolina liar was formed. at some point he said, he followed every bit of my advice from back then.. and it made a big difference in his pursuit to become a well known musician. i can't tell you how emotional and happy this makes me. i know that i know what i'm talking about, but it's one thing to talk and so unbelievably rewarding to have someone listen, and execute, and find success. these types of things are the reason i'm alive. its' the only real purpose i know for myself from an ultimate perspective.

i took a cab to my car, and sparked up my copy of Carolina Liar on my iPod and listened the whole way home, and heard the album a second time while writing this journal. their new album is coming in january.

speaking of musicians i met chamillionaire at some point in the evening, i just didn't know that's who he was. my buddy dee pretty much laughed his ass off. he kinda came up to me and said he'd been hearing a lot about deviantART, and asked for a business card. which was cool so i gave him one. again, i didn't know who he was, so i asked his name.. and he said, "chamillionaire." that's a pretty strange situation right there, right?  i felt bad. bah, i certainly know his music! i just didn't know what he looked like. roflcopter ride anybody?

anyway, earlier i spent about an hour recording my video blog for spirit day so take a look at that if you haven't noticed the purple header and curiously clicked yet :)

i went to lunch with makepictures and SGonzalez to talk shop and catch up. I've been out of town on srs bsnss for about 8 days, so this was my first day back in town. i was briefed on happenings in company operations and we made some decisions. evaluated some opportunities, discussed an office space move to make room for the growing we're doing, and deliberated some hires in particular, plus... we caught up like people do about how life has been in each others absence.

i started the day meeting with my friend jordan who founded DivX that many of you may have used to view or encode videos. anyway we discussed all manner of things after taking a close look at deviantART and some of our underlining technologies so he could really wrap his head around what we're up to. the guy blows my mind every time we talk.. he's really one of the few people in the world who can look playfully at (lets say my) entrepreneurial vision, but then also attack with a mad awesome flow about what he thinks.. quoting philosophers and dropping theories, concepts and interpretations like mom bombs.

on the way to work i dropped bentley off at my best friends house so he could play with his dog, and of course i picked bentley up on the way home tonight. he's now sleeping peacefully next to me on the bed as i write this with one of his paws over his face.

a deviant asked me earlier tonight to share what my day is like sometime.. so i figured, sure i'll just share my wednesday. it's as good a day as any.

have a great rest of your week everybody!

I am going to be quite honest with you, your my hero I look so highly to you because you are a living breathing example of a dream, you took an idea, and made it real. That takes alot and I know it wasn't easy, and I am sure you had a lot of help along the way, but you are still my hero :#1:

Oh wow this reminds me of a day when we went to a cousin's college for a concert. Myself and my two cousins had fun.
We met MIMS. :eager:
It was so awesome to have met him even if it was just for a few minutes while he signed our stuff.

And. That is just a Wednesday for you? Wow.

I like to report a hacking. My friend formally known as shadow-is-crazy was been viciously attacked and hacked since yesterday by an unknown hacker and just this morning he deleted her whole profile. He's not stopping there. He's trying to do the same to her new account and he's cyber-bullying her as well. Please something must done to stop him. Thank you for reading.

I completely understand what you're saying. I am absolutely awful at facing things that have gone wrong in my life, or seeing people that I haven't seen since something unpleasant happened. I'm always head up, face forward, don't look back.

I had a good friend, things happened, and now I run away when I see him. He works with my boyfriend, so this can be awkward. Just as it is when his Mum comes into my shop, or even more so when I trip over my manager in my urgency to evacuate the shop floor when HE comes into the shop for his mum :| I'm 26 with exceptional social skills, but some situations I just can't handle. So I run away.

So it's not just you. At all  Anyway it sounds like you had an awesome day filled with awesome people. There's something about being around successful people, no matter how successful you are yourself, that is inspiring. Everyone achieves differently and there is so much wisdom to be found in these chance meetings.

Here's to more good days

figure out maybe how to face this situation with this person... i bet it's a lot easier to deal with it than to let it bother you as it lingers. ;)

I think that a balance between life's lows and highs are necessary, so expressing the negatives is equally important to the positives. True, the optimistic tone DOES help spike morale amongst your readers (or followers, if you prefer), but life isn't all peace and gaiety.

Anyway, I'm glad you've had quite a positively busy day. Most of what I've been busy with is school-related, taking nearly ALL my leisure...NEARLY.

One of the keys to your success seems to be the way you surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you.

I was moved by the theme in your video about turning negatives into positives. It is beautiful that Deviant Art encourages artists to vent their emotions productively. It becomes the beginning of a dialogue, where people who are attacked find words and ideas that will make it easier to deal with all kinds of conflict.

Sometimes it is hard to argue, when both sides of a conflict believe they are defending something important. Moving past the fear and anger into the deeper reasons and misunderstandings (where those negative emotions come from) is a process that takes a great deal of communication. A lot of people would rather avoid a touchy subject out of fear of offending anyone, but the hardest things to talk about are the most important.

yes, I think that's a smart approach for anyone. since i was a really young kid (about 14) i'd always tell people the internet and bbs's were incredible because they allowed you to extend your network and really choose who you wanted around you.

who is around you has a massive impact on your life post your primary development years.

and so i always found people who inspired me. and that's exactly what i love about deviantART and what it does for artists.

I wouldn't recommend writing too many public journals about the low lows... once in a while if you think it's something the group can help with sure... but it's important to keep an optimistic tone as well if and when you write them. Otherwise don't mind me, I read a lot of cognitive psychology. ;P

It's good to see you as a person again \(and making the same spelling and grammer and punctuation errors we all make). It's good to hear you're doing well from you. I haven't heard from you about you since that random day a year and a half ago when you were in Victoria about groups and stopped in town and met with me and princessmorgan and bought me an italian soda. :D It'd be nice to see you again some time.

I like these blogs. You're a million times cooler than Mark Zuckerberg, as is the community which is why I like it here so much <3. I truly believe that has something to do with the founders not being sell-out douchebags who are solely in it for the money.

Wednesday, lol. All the things that happen in a day. It fascinates me how I can lose so much time in a day. Even when I work morning shifts till 2pm, get home 15 minutes later, I kinda switch off and the rest of the day just slips by.
I had an chance few weeks ago to drive my friend's Clio RS to the other side of the country, and get home that same day, because he needed to pick up his race car there. I got into the car after my morning shift, and all the things that happened to me that day, let's just say that the day seemed neverending. Kinda like the time slows down. To me it was a special day, to my friend, it was Thursday.

Hah! Love your story about chamillionaire.

Ages ago now my dad spent an entire party talking to a pleasant fellow he met there. After the man left, the host came over to ask my dad what he thought of Sting and to comment on what a nice guy the singer was to take time out of his busy schedule to come to the party. This was right as The Police first came on the scene, and my dad had never heard of him before that night.

Haha, thanks. My dad does indeed rock. :giggle:

He'd also like to correct me. (Dads. ;P) He knew who The Police were at the time because he was acquainted with Stewart Copland, but he had no idea what Sting looked like at the time.

My dad has known quite a number of interesting people over the years, and has some great stories of meetings with certain famous (and infamous) individuals.
