Benvidos a Escola Arousa!

CoA by Spotted-Tabby-Cat

The Escola de Equitación Militar Arousa (Arousa Military Riding School) is hosting a show on the school grounds and surrounding area. Although it is primarily a military riding show to showcase cavalry skills, regular sport classes are also available and all are welcome to participate! The show features 10 different classes across 4 days of competition in rural Galicia. Come and compete, enjoy some pulpo a la gallega, and hope that we'll be lucky enough to only have rain half the time!

Most of the classes are rather open-ended to allow people to draw what they desire, so go wild! If you have any questions about what would or would not fit in a class, please ask. Donations, sponsors, and extra judges are greatly appreciated.

Entries due Sept. 30th, 2019 - Closed for judging

Escola Arousa Mapa/Map by Spotted-Tabby-Cat
The show will take place on the grounds of the Escola Arousa, located in the A Coruña province of Galicia, Spain, along the Ria Arousa. Thus far Escola Arousa is loosely defined, so feel free to be creative with your depictions. The overall landscape is very green and somewhat mountainous. The buildings are a mixture of older and newer buildings, with stone being a common building material. No set weather is given, so feel free to draw whatever weather you wish. However, Galicia does have a tendency to be cloudy, rainy, and foggy.
For inspiration, check out the landscape, architecture, and flora and fauna.

Classes

Dressage, Show-Jumping, Three Day Eventing, Major Howze/Endurance, Skill at Arms, Mounted Combat, Authenticity/Halter, Working Equitation, Driving, and Andadura (gaits class)

Doma | Dressage

An exhibition of training and skill, dressage can encompass many different styles, therefore this class is open to any style of dressage, whether it be the usual English style, Doma Vaquera, Western Dressage, or Alta Escuela. Both single riders and pas de deuxs are allowed.
  • Location: Cliff Arena
  • Rider Turnout: The rider may wear either standard dressage clothing appropriate to the shown style or a military or police uniform, whether modern, historical, or fantasy.
  • Horse Tack: The horse's tack must include a saddle and bridle at minimum, with leg protection, ear bonnet, crupper, and breastcollar optional. Tack should be appropriate to either the chosen style or rider's uniform.

Salta de Obstaculos | Show-Jumping

The jumping class is largely a standard show-jumping class, but with a run out of the arena, up a hill, over a jump, and back down into the arena. Both single riders and a pair of riders jumping in tandem are allowed.
  • Location: Large beach (temporary fencing put up for arena with large gap for the run up the hill)
  • Rider Turnout: The rider may wear either standard show-jumping clothing or a military or police uniform, whether modern, historical, or fantasy.
  • Horse Tack: The horse's tack must include a saddle and neckrope or bridle at minimum, with martingale, leg protection, ear bonnet, crupper, and breastcollar optional. Tack should either be standard show-jumping gear or be appropriate to the rider's uniform.

Concurso Completo | Three Day Eventing

Three day eventing combines dressage and show-jumping with cross-country, testing horse and rider's endurance and abilities across a range of disciplines. To enter, one must enter dressage, show-jumping, and a cross-country entry. Each event can also be entered individually, and all entries will be judged together (i.e. both 3DE dressage & individual dressage entries will be judged as one class). A grand score total will be derived from all three entries to create the eventing score. This will result in four placings for each 3DE entrant (Dressage, Cross-Country, Show-Jumping, and full eventing).
  • Location: See Dressage, Show-Jumping; fraga & country area for cross-country
  • Rider Turnout: The rider may wear either standard clothing for each phase or a military or police uniform, whether modern, historical, or fantasy.
  • Horse Tack: The horse's tack must include a saddle and bridle at minimum, with leg protection, ear bonnet, crupper, and breastcollar optional. Tack should be appropriate to either the phase or rider's uniform.

Major Howze Movilidad y Raid | Major Howze Mobility and Endurance

Endurance equivalent
The Major Howze is a class invented by the United States Cavalry Association to test mobility and endurance. The competition consists of two phases: a mobility phase, where the horse and rider ride over a set distance, and an engagement phase, in which horse and rider charge at a target with a sabre and try to spear it or otherwise knock it down. The distance is not disclosed to the riders prior to the event, but an ideal pace to set is shared. For this show the distance will be 13 km/8 miles. It is normally a team event, but for HARPG purposes both teams and individuals are allowed to compete. The time will be judged, with as close to a set ideal time as possible being preferred and times above or under being penalized, as will accuracy at hitting the targets.
  • Location: The event begins in Amarelle, following the Camino de Santiago into the city and finishing in the plaza in front of the western facade of the Cathedral of Santiago. That start is about 1 1/2 hours driving from Escola Arousa.
  • Rider Turnout: The rider may wear either standard endurance clothing or a military or police uniform, whether modern, historical, or fantasy.
  • Horse Tack: The horse's tack must include at minimum a saddle and neckrope or bridle, with leg protection, martingale, crupper, and breastcollar optional. Tack should either be the horse's usual tack or matching the rider's uniform. The route goes through urban areas and over many stone paths, so hoof protection (shoes, boots) is mandatory.

Habilidad de Armas | Skill at Arms

Mounted Shooting, Mounted Archery, Tent Pegging, Ring Jousting equivalent
Skill at Arms tests one's mastery with weapons while on horseback through a course containing obstacles. Sword, lance, pistol, carbine, bow and arrow, or any combination of such may be used to hit various targets while also going over several low jumps. A lance can be picked up from a designated location, but all other weapons must be on the rider's person at the start of the course. Speed and accuracy are judged, much like a show-jumping competition.
  • Location: Large outdoor arena
  • Rider Turnout: The rider must wear a military or police uniform, whether modern, historical, or fantasy.
  • Horse Tack: The horse's tack must include at minimum a saddle and neckrope or bridle, with leg protection, martingale, crupper, and breastcollar optional. Tack should either be the horse's usual tack or matching the rider's uniform.

Combate Montado | Mounted Combat

Jousting, Mounted Fencing equivalent
Mounted combat is the ultimate test of one's fighting skills on horseback. For this event, riders will spar against a competitor with a weapon of their choosing, from mounted fencing to jousting to shooting each other with paint ball guns. The shown opponent can be a ghost horse and rider or another entrant. For this reason, pre-registration is highly encouraged for this class so that everyone can draw each other. You can also enter two horse and rider pairs and draw them against each other.
  • Location: Outdoor arena
  • Rider Turnout: The rider's clothing should be appropriate to the chosen weapon (i.e. plate armour for jousting, fencing gear for mounted fencing, etc.) and should be safe and authentic.
  • Horse Tack: The horse's tack must at minimum include a saddle and bridle, with leg protection, breastcollar, and crupper optional. Appropriate protection gear should be worn on horse and rider.

Autenticidad | Authenticity

Halter, Costume equivalent
Horses may be shown in hand or under saddle. If in hand, horses can be in full tack or only in a halter or bridle. If under saddle, horse and rider will be expected to walk, trot around the arena. Costumes will be judged on appeal and accuracy, and horses will be judged on conformation and movement.
  • Location: Large outdoor arena
  • Rider Turnout: The rider/handler should wear a military or police uniform, whether modern, historical, or fantasy.
  • Horse Tack: The horse should be presented in a halter or bridle for in hand or in full tack matching the rider/handler's uniform for either in hand or under saddle.

Equitación de Trabajo | Working Equitation

Design to showcase various skills needed in the field, working equitation consists of a dressage, ease of handling, and speed phase, as well as a cow phase in team competitions. Any of the phases may be shown, except for the cow phase as that will not be included in this show.
  • Location: Dressage in cliff arena, ease of handling and speed in large outdoor arena
  • Rider Turnout: The rider may wear either standard working clothes or a military or police uniform, whether modern, historical, or fantasy.
  • Horse Tack: The horse's tack must include a saddle and neckrope or bridle at minimum, with leg protection, martingale, crupper, and breastcollar optional. The tack should be either the horse's standard working gear or appropriate to the rider's uniform.

Enganches | Driving

Driving horses were historically just as important as ridden horses, and therefore are represented with their own class. Any sort of driving is allowed, although teams pulling wagons, limber and cannon, an ambulance, or caissons are preferred. Teams of four or more may have postilions, if appropriate to the shown driving style.
  • Location: Large outdoor arena
  • Rider Turnout: The driver may wear either clothing appropriate to the style of driving or a military artillery or teamster uniform, whether modern, historic, or fantasy. Postilions should wear clothing matching the driver.
  • Horse Tack: The horse(s) should have harness and bridles and be hitched appropriate to the shown style. Ear bonnets, leg protection, and ornamentations are allowed.

Andadura | Andadura Gaits Competition

Andadura Galega is the regional horse competition, originally for showing off the gaits of the local horses. This consists of the horse showing at a gait down at 100 meter straight, turning around, and returning back. The horse must remain in the shown gait at all times except in the run-up and during the turn. Although traditionally only certain gaited horses were shown, any horse will be allowed to be shown. Gaited horses must be shown in whatever gait they possess; non-gaited horses must be shown at a trot. Speed, smoothness, purity of gait, and clarity of movement are judged.
  • Location: Large beach
  • Rider Turnout: The rider may either wear traditional showing clothing appropriate to their horse's breed and gait or a military or police uniform, whether modern, historical, or fantasy.
  • Horse Tack: The horse's tack must at minimum include a saddle and bridle, with leg protection, ear bonnet, breastcollar, and crupper optional. Any auxiliary gait aids are not allowed; all gaits must be natural and horses flat shod. Tack should either be of a style befitting the horse's breed and gait or matching the rider's uniform.

Hello, I have a question about the jump Ponto do Burgo Liverpool jump in the Showjumping class.
I have difficulties imagining where it would be placed in water on the beach. Is it places in the actual coastline, where the water is shallow, or is it placed in a small stream that runs from the inland to the sea?
Spotted-Tabby-Cat's avatar
The idea was that it would be a specially made pool on the beach, but if you want to put it in the shallows, that would be cool too!
