Recently, over the past couple of weeks or so a number of people have been getting attacked by a virus while on Deviantart. This has resulted in said people having to do 'system restores' and even having to go as far as reformatting.

Some have been known to pop up as a deceiving "windows update" popup of some sort while browsing DA or upon full viewing deviations.

I have received numerous pop-up warnings while on the Deviant art website regarding these.

I created this news article in hopes that the community would become more aware of it and take precautions in making sure you have virus protection. Malawarebytes has been a known solution, but people have had trouble installing after being attacked by the virus.

I hope people will spread this information if they find they have had attacks as well, not to spread fear but to inform others of what is going on and could happen.

Those who have been attacked are now too afraid to go on Deviantart after being attacked once, and I would hate to see this happen to everyone simply because the information wasn't out there.

So please help to spread the news while hopefully this issue is looked into.

More information can be read at the above link where people have been helpful in posting solutions to trying to avoid this worm.

I keep getting something that auto-downloads a screwed up version of Chrome and tries (and fails because Chrome stops it) to execute the .exe file as soon as it goes through (it tries to download a second part it needs for the main .exe to work I guess and Chrome always stops it, so I think they're definitely aware of it).

Anyone getting this weird pop up that says stuff about trojans?
EriFab Featured By Owner May 20, 2014  Student Digital Artist
I know this is an old article, but today I got this problem. I use opera and in any deviantart page that I go I get a warning that there is a virus, it shows me the link of the page that is infected and that link isn't even deviantart. Luckily the antivirus program deals with the problem, but it goes over and over again. What am I supposed to do? :grump:

Most infected users use Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer is most likely to be infected. All you need to just some err...Powerful mcafree or something that stops viruses, another way is just go onto your mobile and if you see the fake popup..And it's downloading...You could stop it I think? Cause viruses usually go for the files. ^-^

not really i use google chrome but before i had  adblock plus and no script and before i would get this flash player trying to install where my McAfee always would say it was a virus
Nuece Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2014

They can be bound to ads and commercial banners which auto installs through programs like Java or flash player as a fake updater, which sometimes only can be removed manually.

"viruses usually go for the files" what??

How do I know if I have the virus?
Danicarsart Featured By Owner May 7, 2013
And, you get form Deviantart Trojan Horses. I've got 69 trojans form Deviantart.

So if you are on Deviantart be sure that you have a good virus scanner like McAfee. I should scan your pc or laptop :B

I got a fake popup from dA a while ago, about a month ago, and I got one today, from "Windows Updates". I knew it was fake because I restarted my entire computer back to factory settings this morning, and the only thing I've been on since is Coolmath, dA and CS. ... I knew it was fake because they had a typo on their message, and it was an internet thing. It said "migth" instead of "might", and was obviously fake. It said I had the same three viruses as last time. It wasn't porn though. It tried to say that I had three critical conditions, a Trojan, a malware and an adware. Guys, this is starting to get on my nerves, please fix it or I won't be on dA for a while. Both times it popped up in a new tab it closed the dA tab, so I knew it was from here.

Is it called RauchyGFs or something to that affect?
GuardianLove Featured By Owner Nov 14, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
No it's called badoink
Jabber-Wock Featured By Owner Nov 14, 2012
That's it! I got offered a porn app and I totally forgot it's name, but that's the one! I did try to use the back button to escape to deviantART, so I guess it was then I got rerouted to the other site.

Ah ha! There is a pattern of some kind.
GuardianLove Featured By Owner Nov 14, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
Ya it's happened to a lot of people I know with iPads
Spoonful0fcats Featured By Owner Oct 29, 2012
I would copy the link it sends you to and report it to DA.

They have a guideline protocol for reporting on what information helps them solve issues the most.

Surprising to hear it's on the ipad since usually apple products have 'higher' security :<
I hope you get it fixed

I got a nasty shock just now when Avast! alerted me that it had blocked a virus from this site. I never expected to find viruses on a site like Deviantart, but after doing a bit of research I discovered that it is quite common for this site. I have now downloaded adblock for IE9, so hopefully that will help prevent any malicious attacks!

I just did too. I had to reformatt my whole drive - just now. I knew it was a virus, because it looked different than my operation systems' colors and backgrounds. The window wasn't right.

Then, my window just started to blink uncontrollably, and then said that my browser (firefox) was a virus. I knew this wasn't true, but every time I tried to get online, it would say it's a virus and needed to be shut down.

Therefore, I couldn't get online unless I used Internet Exploder. I reformatted my hard drive and ... lets' see how long that lasts!

I just had one (still in the middle of scanning after fixing it) that shut me downcompletely. I couldnt even get to my antivirus software. What i ended up doing was opening up my antivirus by hitting the Start button nd rightclickng on it. I then selected "Run as an administrator" which forced it to open. The irs didnt ke it and gave me several pop ups, but i was able to scan and clean my comp. Im waitingto post this untl the scan is clean to prove that its fixed....

........ Oh, I got the fake virus potection viirus, said it was Win 7 Security 2012. I wouldnt trust anything that says that, if i was you....

...... There! All better. Hopefully the Admins can fix this *stage whispers "thats your cue"*

wow, that was nice to know now, ill be more careful about this site and make sure i know a pic is safe. and also you should tell the dev art admins about this, maybe they can help prevent this stuff from happening cus i dont want to go to this cite any more if that's going to happen to me(not that im not going to stop coming here, the pics that people make are fun to look at, and i could just wipe my computer too).

Hmmm...Honestly I never thought this..but then I relized. I have gotten this once. (Way before I got an account and this lasted over 2 months 'till we did a factory reset) I was googling art of kitsunes to help me draw a picture in paint, and AS SOON as I got on Deviantart up comes a pop up from a rogue war called "Windows Vista Ant-virus". Being the panicky person with computers I am I started crying and ran over to my moms room and woke her up.She mcafee quik scanned and nothing was wrong. So my dad wasn't able to fix it until 2 months later...Oh how I missed World of Warcraft <3

Well I didn't knew about these kind of infections until today >.<
I think I should tell what happened to me because it was slightly different from the cases below >.< :
Today I accessed to DA from my Ipod, and I noticed that my session was logged off. I tried to log in but I couldn't D:
After that I went to my laptop and I tried to open "my messages" page from here...And well, the page was kind of messy, and my anti virus appeared with some attacks blocked...
It wasn't an installation of anti virus or what happened in the cases below...
Well, I don't know what to do in those cases when a virus appears, so...I removed the cookies but my AV was still blocking attacks from here...Mainly from all the pictures or animations in the page o.O
I restarted my laptop and my anti virus began scanning for those virus..and found something like "ScrInject.B.gen" virus o_O I deleted it but when I entered DA again to check what happened...that virus went again into my pc ._.
I finally installed something to block ads, and that seemed to have resolved the problem...
But I'm still a bit afraid about this D:

Oh and sorry for my horrible english u_u

Yeah, this is pissing me off now! Twice this week already! Had to use rkill, malwarebytes, and avast to save my butt. My patience is wearing thin!
McLogan Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2011   Photographer
For the past week, I have gotten Anti-virus live on my PC each time I upload something to my gallery. Luckily it seems limited to the browser cache so a simple reboot in safe mode and a dump of cookies fixes it. Once though I had to delete my PC profile and make a new one. Though I recemend the second option as a last resort. Doing a trace I was able to find out it did in fact come from a Nickl.exe/mymoneymaker.png, that can appear behind an Add. What happens is someone hacks your advertisement provider, and programs this into a number of "clean adds". So the hacker, if smart enough, can change what adds it infects, and make it so they do not always have to be clicked. So this virus attches itself to a real legitimet advertisment.

I was so happy I thought DA had gotten things under control, but I was attacked again through DA

Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\2Z3LSS17\darkhunteraddict[1].jpg

with this: Trojan/Win32/jpgiframe.A

DA is getting risky to use again which is sad.
