Mini story:

Once upon a time, five brothers lived within a shining castle of silver and gold, the eldest Thomas ruling as their King. Each prince was beloved among the kingdom: Thomas for his wisdom and inclusiveness, Logan for his intelligence and his down-to-earth nature; Roman for his creativity and bravery; Patton for his loving and affectionate nature; and Virgil with his quiet but cautious (if pessimistic) outlook.

As the years passed, the kingdom flourished until one day a stranger came into town clad in purple, black and gold. This stranger greeted the five brothers with an offer of their heart’s deepest desires. To the King he gave a rose and promised him personal peace.

To Roman he gave a small flock of Phoenixes that sang promises of courage and unending victory. To Logan he offered a book of spells and the promise of new knowledge. To Patton he gave the gift of a garden whose beautiful and sweet-scented flowers would never wilt. To Virgil he gave a crown that promised to give him the gift of unending affection. Each of the brothers took their gifts eagerly except Virgil whose uneasy senses had him hesitate.

The moment each prince touched their gifts they were enthralled by them and that night the thrall took hold. Logan could not tear his eyes away from the book which would never stop adding pages as he read later and later into the nights as they passed, unable to put it down. Roman heard the songs of his phoenixes and could not stop himself from leaving the castle to fight bigger and bigger monsters, no defeat so satisfying. Patton’s garden grew more lush and vibrant and beautiful than any garden before and he refused to leave the flowers, tending to them day and night, basking in their beauty. The rose Thomas had been given was set in a vase by his bedside and it’s spores filled the room with a peaceful, intoxicating scent, drawing him into a sleep he could not wake from.
The only one unaffected by his gift was dear Virgil. the youngest of the brothers did not have a desire as strong as the others, for his deepest wish was already fulfilled and could not be tainted: To be loved and accepted by his family. The crown showed him bats willing him to listen and be their friends and yet he could not see them as anything but shadows.

The man who had deceived them cackled and sat upon the King’s Throne with the intent of ruling the land, his ravens eager to assist him, but Virgil approached with a sword, ready to fight. No one would tear his family apart, especially not a snake disguising himself as a man.......
