Why is it that on dA, people seem to like/be more impressed by crisp pixel drawings than non-pixelated ones, yet people I know in real life tend to do the complete opposite? I've seen this a few times now x)

I think maybe because growing up, most people had paint as a drawing program and not other things such as photoshop and that. Most people (including me) drew on paint a lot however the smooth lines you get on other programs would look AMAZING to someone who was only used to the crisp pixels on paint.

Here on dA its quite the opposite I guess, most people are able to have access to programs that let you draw with smooth lines, seeing someone being able to pixel is then amazing.

Just an idea hehe.

it was sorta like that for me haha
I'd see nice smooth pictures on the internet and love them because geez, how do people even do that?

Haha, yea, I remember hating only having Paint because I couldn't draw like everyone else - and thinking of that now, I still don't draw the way I thought I would once I downloaded other programs x')

I think it's because people on Deviantart understand how difficult pixeling is, as to people outside don't.

On dA It's like:
-Really great drawing- WOAH!
-Pixels- OMG WOW OMG THIS IS AMAZING!

Irl:
-Really great drawing- WOAH OMG THIS IS AMAZEBALLS!
-Pixels- Meh.

Yeah, I never noticed until now.

I agree, I mean I really like pixel art, but ms paint art seems to get a lot more credit than expected? Like honestly it's not that hard to draw with, especially once you know how to layer things with it.

Yea, I find Paint easier for backgrounds actually, and I don't think I should be praised for not being able to make those backgrounds in GIMP. I wish I could do better backgrounds in other programs too, and it irks me how something is good just because I use a program that is "hard to use" according to some. Because when I show those drawings to people out of dA, they don't think it's that special.
I kind of feel like people like it just because of the medium it was made in, and not because of the art itself? Same with Muro stuff, a lot of people comment things like "WOW this is good for Muro!" and it kind of makes me wonder, is it actually any good in general, or do you just admire it because you can't use the tool yourself?

hhh yess. Paint is just the basics of basics regarding art programs, and really that makes it the easiest to use. And while I can understand people praising you for using MS paint due to it's stripped down tools, I don't think it should be put higher above high quality programs like Sai or Photoshop.
Personally I've gotten tons of praise for animating on Ms Paint, and really I shouldn't because frankly the reason I haven't upgraded to Sai animations is frankly because I'm really bad with layers and can't really work it right. soyesIagree.

Indeed. I actually feel I'm kind of handicapped when it comes to art for not being able to work with more complicated programs. I really should learn more about them.
Whenever I animate a thing (like once in a thousand years) I get praise for using free programs like GIMP but honestly I'm just too dumb to figure Flash out, and I'm actually really angry at myself for that reason.

That's what I think. Sure, pixels can look really cute but sometimes full drawings with proper unpixellated shading look better.

It depends on so many things, sometimes the one will look better, sometimes the other, but I think that's about equal xP

Maybe people are just impressed by everything here? This is DA, people are here with the orientations much more different than of the actual world who's not aware or not using DA...
