When you read a journal related to autism and people in the comments are "informing" one another - using misconceptions and stereotypes about autism, without actually knowing what they are talking about

My brother has a pretty severe mental disability. When he was younger, though, it seemed like he had autistic-like tendencies, and that's what he was diagnosed as. So I grew up calling him that. However, pretty much every time I've used that term I feel like people get a misconception about what he's actually like. Like literally almost every time.

Now I honestly just tell people he's mentally disabled or brain-damaged because they seem to understand what I mean a lot better. Whereas anyone who drops the word 'autism' immediately has to deal with all these people who have no idea what it is, or have their own conceptions of it. I almost don't even really know what it is anymore. It's so poorly defined and tossed around so carelessly that it's really hard to say what, exactly, autism is, or what people seem to think it is. :|

But yeah. I totally get what you mean.

Yea, it's really hard. I have autism myself, but I often fear to mention it because of what people make out of it.

Idm .o. everyone looks at it differently, based on what they experienced themselves u v u who am I to misjudge their experience? At my school 90% of the teachers and 70% of the students is autistic (programming school), there you can easily see the differences. Some are really introvert or some are rude, others are really hyper or shy. Some people don't really show it clearly, surprising me when hearing about it. I guess just like everyone it's more about personality. I don't think it matters too much myself u v u.

I was talking about people providing wrong information and acting as if it is a general fact about autism. That's not okay...

hmm that's not okay indeed, but like I said, it's probably based on their experiences ;o; maybe they met somebody who was like that but that doesn't make it a part of autism, more of the personality c:

Yea, that's what I mean, it just shouldn't be generalized.

"You can't be autistic, you are in a relationship."

Sad thing, I've actually seen that one.

Ughhhh, yes those things too.
Or because you don't have one special skill that you're unbeliebably good at, like those people who can redraw a city after flying over it once, calculate better than a computer, or play the piano super good.

autism comes in so many different... shapes and sizes? ( i can tell, I basically grew up around people that happen to have autism or anything else, really)
you can't even compare people with a certain form of autism, because it's most likely that they don't share 100% of the traits at the exact level of how 'bad' it is.
'bad' meaning that it might be a little bit thougher to deal with it or something like that, but that doesn't mean every one who has autism has a hard time dealing with it, some might need some extra help but some need nothing at all \O/.
autism doesn't make you stupid either, it's just a thing that has been added to you so you at least have something to do in life because being socially perfect is so boooringggg xD

People with autism are hard to connect to. I know a guy that has autism and lives an almost perfectly normal life, but for some reason, I seem to be able to comunicate with him the most, beside his mother.

That's kind of a generalization there. I think you missed the point of this poll.
