Sooo this summer, as I don't have that much to do in August/September, I plan to brush up some of my languages and learn a bit of new languages. Not saying I'll be any good at them but if anyone speaks these languages (can be native speaker or we can lear

I only know Estonian, English (obviously hahaha), and Russian. and phrases from other languages. and I'd also like to learn Icelandic (and perhaps German) because why the heck not. :iconlelplz:

I know Dutch, French and English :P I can understand German though. And I'm trying to learn Icelandic x'D
I see, my mom is obsessed with Sweden xD I see many Swedish people these days :0

I'm really heavily trying to learn Swedish but it's difficult because of Sweden's lack of exported goods in their language. A large amount of people there already know English so it's just their language of trade, but I still love the language and the culture so I do my best, and it sounds like you have a relative head start so I recommend that. Then again I'm learning seven languages so I have no idea what you want me to suggest. :la:

I've heard that Swedish is one of the hardest languages in the world to learn because we have so many rules in the language, and almost the same amount of exceptions! Also the letters å,ä and ö is very hard to pronounce according to some people :)

It is pretty challenging but I wouldn't say one of the hardest. It has a lot of rules but I'm learning them pretty quickly. It's actually pretty close to English, so I can see how someone from another region of the world would find it difficult if their grammar structures aren't similar. As far as the accents, that's really the biggest hoop I've seen people have to jump through, but I got it almost immediately so I don't know how much others struggle with it.

Also, there's a LOT of cognates so I almost worry that people will understand it when I use it around others. However a lot of these cognates are spelled slightly different and pronounced differently so you have to think for a second before realizing it, for example one of my favorite combined words, 'eftermiddagsaktiviteter" is really simple once you realize it's literally "after midday activities", so extra-curricular activities. But I digress. It's all fun.

Oh I love how you know how to say "eftermiddagsaktiviteter" a word I have said about two times in my entire life :P btw, do you take classes in Swedish or are you self-taught? :)

Entirely self taught and it is the most torturous thing I have ever done to myself. :'D
All the languages I'm learning are self taught, save a year of French in High school by requirement. But I don't think I'm doing too bad, I'm just not at the point I can hold an entire conversation. And I always get stuck reading sentences that aren't in official publications because I have little knowledge of slang or the multiple ways of saying one thing.

wow that's amazing! I would never be able to teach myself languages :o It must be so hard to know how words are pronounced etc. So how do you teach yourself? YouTube?

I am very impressed!

It's very informal, I just look for any material I can that's presented in the language and do my best to remember words and stuff. Surprisingly I can remember a ton of words by just seeing them once or twice because they stand out to me. Pronunciation isn't difficult either.

However, the most IMPORTANT thing I do, is I try to learn as much of the grammar system of the language I'm currently studying FIRST so I can essentially just piece in the words because I already know how to use them!

I'm not very proficient in any of the languages I'm learning, but for what I'm given, I'm proud of myself. It's just something I like to do.

That's really impressive! I would never have the patience to do that :( I hope we can have a conversation in Swedish soon! :D

I guess it's easier to learn it in here, some universities have Swedish in their language options :P
Seven? xD Which ones?

Yeah I'm jealous of everyone else. One of the colleges close to my home had it for a little while as one course, but the only person qualified to teach it lost their job so they don't offer it this year. :'D

And yeah, I'm not learning them all actively, but I want to learn them before I die and I already know at least a little bit in all, but a good amount some.

I'm actively learning Swedish and Japanese, but I also know a ton of French and I'm slowly working on Latin, Finnish, Russian, and Greek. Gaelic was in there but it like, doesn't exist so there's not much hope.

Aww, shame :'D

Yea, same here, I don't think I'll get to learn them very actively, but hey, I can try to learn bits of it B)

That's a lot of languages :'3 Good luck on them! Yea, it's hard to learn some x')
