When I was younger, I was taught that it's because deoxygenated blood is blue/purple... :o
But then at secondary school, our Biology teacher told us the truth. :meow:

To be honest I've never heard anyone talk about blood being blue before yesterday. x')

It's just light. Your veins are clear, I belive, but with the skin over them, it masks and changes the color of the red blood flowing through them.

They are not really clear, but yeah, it's the light. xD

A lot of people think your veins are blue, but they just appear that way x3 To my knowledge they're a purplish color.

Yeah, they are a reddish-purplish colour indeed xP But they appear blue through your skin.

If blood is blue, then I'm a poptart. The pigment in your veins seems likely, but no. Veins are a reddish color, I believe ( I might be wrong there ) and it's definitely light.

Yea, true. I guess everyone can see the answer in the comments by now but it's good that people know because answers like these make my toes curl. :'D

Oops. Forgot I was spoiling the answer. xD

Not sure actually. I'm really sure the first one is not real. I've never seen a only a vein before (only drawings, and they weren't in colour), but I believe they only exist in red, so I think it's the third option: light.

Yep, you're right! It's explained well here actually: [link]
Wall of text, but explains it well :P

Yeah I is smart! :dummy:

But still, I don't know why at Biology classes they don't show us real pictures of organs, veins and so on... It might look a bit ugly and eerie, but still..

Yes, indeed. It's good to know what the real thing looks like after all xP

Ahh wow I watching stuff about this just like a few weeks ago. My teachers in the past in taught us that it's blue because of the lack of oxygen, but doesn't it actually have to do with light refraction?

They did? Seriously?
Yes, it's the light. x)
