Here it's common to tip servers, and we always tip them (usually like 5%, give or take depending on the quality of service) but I don't pay so I'm not the one to tip them heheh.

Where tipping in customary (where you're actually being served) I'll generally tip the greater of 20% or 3 dollars. Where tipping is truly optional (when you're picking up takeout or at Subway, Starbucks or my local coffee shops) I'll generally sick a dollar in the tip jar. It ain't much, but it goes to the workers.

It's pretty common tho I find some people do it always regardless where I have been taught that you only tip if it was a good service. If your server was rude, or your food was wrong, or if you had to wait two hours before being served, you are not to tip the waiter and if you do it won't be the average 10%.

Where I live it is extremely rude to not tip, even if the service was terrible. It is almost always implied that if you have a waiter or waitress, you tip them. The people serving here live off of tips and not so much what they are paid. It is definitely necessary to tip if you live in the US or are visiting.

In Hong Kong tipping servers is a no. It's not very common and the servers don't expect tips which is why many American jokes confuse me?? Do they really tip all they time??? My family and I only tip if they have done a really good job ie. charismatic, fast serving so if I was in the US I'd be so rude xD

In the US, many waiters are underpaid by default becayse their bosses expect them to get paid enough in tips to make up for it. If they don't get tipped, they have maybe enough to pay off their taxes or rent - and nothing else. So for them, the tip really is something they need, as their living situation depends on it!

I heard that in Japan, tipping can be considered an insult to the one being tipped (because you imply that they need that money more than you do) or to the owner of the restaurant (because you imply they are underpaying their staff). So it really depends on where you live!

I usually do because servers usually only get paid $3-5 an hour and have to rely on tips.
