Do you think it's a good or a bad idea to depict characters and couples that are not heterosexual in children's shows and movies?

Me and a friend who studies game design were talking about this a while back. She was working on a concept idea for a game where she had two homosexual characters, but she said that if she were ever to make the game, she wouldn't include the gay characters if the game was for children under 12. Her reason is that the children wouldn't understand it. I don't think this is a bad opinion, but I think that the earlier children see this stuff, the easier they will accept it. As long as the queer characters aren't portrayed badly and are shown just as normal as straight characters, it should be no problem.

I think children could be able to understand it just fine, actually! And yes, I agree.

Personally I think it's good -- unless you say something to them about it, kids will grow up to think that "hey look not only can it be girl x boy, but also boy x boy and girl x girl etc." and will be more accepting of this stuff. Depending on what age they are at the time, they may not even question it. But if they are confused or surprised or whatever it's simple for the parents to explain that some people simply don't fall in love with the opposite gender, which is dAMN FINE OKAY

In this world, there are all kinds of people. I'd wait until the child is a 8-year-old so that they know what's going on, though(based on Americans). Honestly, you can shelter kids for a little bit but they need to know the world for what it is, not a frivolous fantasy.

At the same time, television must no longer show stereotypes. Not all gays are sluts, not all Blacks are gangsters, etc. The media is what's corrupting the younger generation.

This is a really good question by the way, Spitfires.

Yea true. Even if the focus of the story isn't on a couple, they often still appear in the background (parents of characters, for example).

And indeed, they must be shown the same way heterosexual white people are shown - not defined by skin colour, orientation or geligion, but with a whole complete personality. As A person and not a representation of an orientation.

I'm glad you think so!

it's better not to keep kids in the dark about the world around them
regardless of whether you agree with it or not, they exist and should be represented
if violence can be depicted in kid's shows, why not lgbt+ people?

Good. In some children's shows there is straight couples that make flirtatious remarks or are dating/married. Why not homo couples too?

It's a changing world. It would be good for homosexual couples to appear in children's shows. If it's something children are used to seeing they won't question it when they are older. I'm almost wanting to say that it might decrease homophobia.

The problem is there is already a lot of homophobic people/parents that would complain. Homophobia already took over and toxicated too much of the world v.v

In happier conversation:
Merry Christmas Eve/Christmas!!!Merry christmas everybody Christmas- Pikachu Santa

And even if not, there are often couples in the background anyway, that might not be as obvious, but they're still there. Parents of characters, for example.

I'm pretty sure it would decrease homophobia by at least a bit, as people wouldn't see it as abnormal anymore and be more understanding of it. If they saw it as a normal healthy relationship rather than a freakish sin against nature I'm sure they'd be more tolerant of it.

Yea. I don't think that should keep us from doing it anyway though!

And thanks! Merry Christmas to you as well :)

If heterosexual couples are depicted in children's shows, why can't LGBT couples be? There's too much homophobia and transphobia ;;

I don't think it is a good idea because they are children's shows, they don't need to get into any romance relationships at their age.

But what about straight couples depicted in them?

I mean that children's shows shouldn't really focus on couples. There's plenty of good children's shows without any couples in them.

What about parents shown in children's movies? The FOCUS doesn't have to be on the couple, but that doesn't mean they don't appear in the background.

I know, I had that in mind too. That sort of thing is common in some kids shows here, although I don't know if it's the same where you're from. The characters don't have parents, there's just a bunch of people interacting with a simple plot line.

Good idea. The world is changing and I think it would be good for young kids to grow up knowing that this is okay. If they see if in cartoons they wont question it in real life.
